PLEASE SEE UPDATE AT BOTTOM.
Over the years I have tried a number of different diets to lose the excess 15 pounds I gained when I quit smoking and gave birth to my second child.
By the time baby was 12 I had "dieted" my way from 15 extra pounds to almost 40! Name a diet and I probably tried it. The 2 day diet, Hilton Head Metabolism Diet, Lean for Life, No diet diet, Think Yourself Slim, and the list goes on.
There was high protein, grapefruit, strenuous exercise and more. Weight would go off and then return. My pants got tighter and I grew more frustrated.
Then I read a report that said the majority of people who had lost weight and kept it off did so by following a low fat diet, adding exercise and eating less calories.
It hit me. There was no magic pill, potion or food combination. Yes temporary fixes, but in the long run to lose weight and keep it off I was simply going to have to reduce calories and work out more.
Bottom line I would have to count calories and exercise. So I purchased a little calorie book and a little calorie journal. As I was making the purchase an online an ad popped up for EDIETS.
I figured EDIETS was another scam, but the ad entreated me to pop in my weight and height and it would give me a goal. So I did. Then I checked into the EDIETS plan a little bit more. One of the diet quackwatch places I checked (chasefreedom) listed it as the top rated diet. I noticed that ediets had over 860,000 members. The price seemed reasonable too. $35 to join for 3 months. That worked out to only 30cents a day.
I figured I would try it and quit if I didn't like it. Too my delight I found I love EDIETS.
After you join EDIETS you are given the caloric range you need to meet daily to achieve your goals. They also give you a menu plan. You can choose a menu plan with convenience foods or homecooked items. And you can adjust your plan to include or exclude certain foods like red meat or dairy. A shopping list for the menu plan is also included. Print it and you are off to the store with a list of everything you need for the week.
Though the menu plans are easy to follow with clear directions, I decided to use the calories suggested for me and design my own meal plan. That way I would have more flexibility. I follow the guidelines EDIETS gives for healthy eating. Lots of fruits and veggies, plenty of water, lean proteins etc. and I plan my own meals. Within a short time I began to lose weight.
Though I don't follow the meal plans from EDIETS there are so many other features at EDIETS that being a member has been very helpful to my weight loss plan.
EDIETS features online chat groups, over 85 support boards that cover a broad range of dieting situations (even some that aren't dieting related). Seminars daily on different topics like how much calcium you need, how to avoid pitfalls when dining out and other diet related discussions. Success stories. A conference program. A food database. A shopping area. A fitness section. And so much more. Its like a University for weight loss.
The support is 24/7. Feel lonely or upset hop on a board and share your feelings. Worry that your fitness program is not getting results? Email one of the EDIETS fitness experts. Need emotional support. Someone is there for you. There are lots of opportunities to learn. And a responsive, excellent staff who care that you accomplish your goals.
New members can sign up for the mentor program also. In which an established EDIETS member emails them encouragement and answers questions.
The EDIETS plan is exciting. Now you can lose weight in the privacy of your home, with full guidance and support!
Since I joined I have lost weight and remain highly motivated. I love the graphs EDIETS has that show my progress. I love having someone there for me when I need it.
It's my weight loss solution.
I would encourage anyone who is trying to lose weight to check into the program!
UPDATE: I wrote this review several years ago based on my experiences with Ediets. I found it to be a supportive site. However, after some time with the site I realized that I would prefer to decide on my own menus and I discontinued my membership. I did notice a rash of positive reviews, written shortly after I wrote mine. This seems a little odd since they were almost all written around the same date...ie like people had been encouraged to write the reviews. I personally was never asked to write a review for Ediets nor am I affiliated with them in anyway.
After reading the newer reviews on Epinions it appears that what you are offered is not what you may get anymore. That they may be seeking additional fees for what one thinks is included when they join. I have not been a member for years, so I would encourage anyone who is considering a membership to carefully examine what they are offering. I actually was considering rejoining till I read the more current reviews here at epinions.
