Many of the Kenmore Refrigerators today come with a built in water filter that removes certain contaminants in the water. When we purchased our Sears Kenmore Refrigerator it too came with a water filter cartridge. The idea of getting cleaner water than what was coming out of our tap was appealing to us.
Six months after purchasing our Refrigerator the water filter needed replacement. Originally the salesman told us the filters were about $30. When we bought the new one it was $32 plus tax. At first six months seemed a little quick for the filter to need replacement. But after thinking about it, six months was a long time for the amount of water we moved through the filter. We took into consideration that it was not only the water that was being filtered, but it was also the water being used to make ice in the ice maker.
THE FILTER
When it came time to replace the filter, exactly six months to the day we bought the refrigerator, we went to Sears and bought a new one. The filter itself comes in a box. Changing the filter is a simple process if the instructions are followed. The refrigerator will warn you when the filter needs to be changed. Sears states that when the warning light comes on the filter is about 90% full. I believe they are practicing "new math." When we hit the warning level the filter lasted another week (after the six months) before we had to replace it. I recommend that you purchase a new filter when the light changes to the warning level and change it quickly.
CHANGING THE FILTER
To change the filter you remove the old one from the refrigerator (it is kind of heavy) and take the cap that is on the old filter and put it on the new filter. You insert the new filter and you are done. It is a simple process but you must follow the instructions because it is important that you flush your system for 6 to 7 minutes after the new filter is installed. This will clear air from the line and allow for an adequate water flow.
The old filter can be discarded in the trash. The Sears Kenmore Replacement Filter 9902 will provide you with crisp, clean, cold drinking water. It can save you the added expense and hassle of buying bottled water.
