| robv's Full Review: The Varmint Hunter Magazine |
This is an excellent magazine for people interested in long range and/or precision rifle shooting. Covers a wide variety of calibers, from .17 Rem to .50 BMG and a variety of of wildcat and hand-loaded cartridges. Many articles on are the cutting edge of firearms technology. Lots of articles on custom rifles, wildcat loads and high end optics. The technical articles are written so that they are not dry, but entertaining and interesting. Discussions of mathematics and physics relating to long-range precision shooting can be very technical, arcane and exceedingly dry reading. Similarly, precision shooting is an art, with the associated theories and "magic". The articles are written by members, and are able to provide extensive and detailed information on the science and theory of precision shooting and be interesting and entertaining reading, without becoming a breathless, Tiger Beat style rant on how totally fabulous and cool something is. There is enough depth of detail to check the math and physics for accuracy and to do a reality check on the theory and "magic" aspects. The photographs are well done and not limited to "my hunting trip" kind of stuff. One of the interesting things about long-range precision shooting is the craftsmanship, imagination and style that go into creating some of the custom rifles. Exotic metals (i.e.: titanium), custom features (i.e.: spiral fluted rifle bolts) and different finishes (i.e.: purple robar) create very exotic and beautiful weapons. Just reading the advertisements is very interesting, a wide variety of useful tidbits made the someone passionate about firearms. Every spring they also list varmint hunting opportunities by state.
