Sharp MD-MT15 - Good price for versatile Mini-Disc

Written: Jan 29 '01 (Updated Jan 29 '01)
Pros:Good sound quality, low cost, versatile.
Cons:Controls hard to use, skips from vibration/loud sound
The Bottom Line: Good unit. Good sound quality.

In my work as a drummer, I needed a mini-disc recorder/player to "audition" songs for a show I was doing. A mini-disc was perfect as it allowed me to instantly cue up the next song to preview it prior to kicking off the song. I decided on the Sharp MD-MT15 as its price was good and it did all I needed it to do.

The unit has a good battery life and sound quality is quite good, if a little under powered. If you need to do live recording I recommend a decent quality mic, as cheap ones are unreliable.

I tried to record a few rehersals with the unit, but found the vibration from high volume levels made the unit skip, or stop recording and starting a new track. So I don't think I can recommend the unit for live recording. Others may have had better success.

The controls and menus are straight forward, but I found some of the controls a bit hard to memorize. I found myself looking for the instructions every now and then.

I don't want to pan this product to much though, as personal music systems and recorders have come so far in the past 10 years. Size, cost and quality have all improved. You can probably spend more money on another unit, but it may not perform much better than this. The key functions of recording live or inputed music, and playing it back all work well.
