Sometimes a girl gets lucky. That luck could be in the perfect pair of shoes, a great bra – or it could be my boyfriend. As special as he, for no other reason than he loves me bought me this brand spanking new, spiffy Compaq 6016US. A significant upgrade from my old and almost defunct Compaq – the 6016US is more computer than I really know what to do, but I love her just the same.
- What I Was Looking For -
To try to avoid ending up with more computer than I really needed, I asked a few questions (thanks Jennjoy & Xiphoid) and just went with what knowledge I had. I was kind of leery about getting a Compaq, but since they merged with Hewlett Packard (thank you NC10) – I figured I’d be good to go. I knew it had to be fairly quick because I have little to no tolerance. I wanted it to be something I wouldn’t have to worry about upgrading for a while and I wanted it to not be ugly or look like it was invented at NASA. I also really wanted a cd-burner and oh yeah, I wanted to get all of this for under $1000.

OOooOOOooOO Mama Loves You
I LOVE this computer. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, it zips along. I did end up with a bit more computer than I needed, like the DVD drive, which was kind of an added perk. Setting the computer up was a breeze since everything is pre-loaded, I didn’t have any problems at all. My hard drive is enormous considering I don’t really save that many things and I’ve got tons of memory to run the few programs I tend to run all at once. My spiffy little mama also has 6 (count em), 6 USB ports, which is more than enough for anything I might ever have to hook into it. I know Mac users and Linux people will recoil, but I love XP – I think its much more user friendly than older versions. I’ve had her for almost 3 weeks and haven’t had one problem at all. I did end up watching a DVD later and it was excellent.
I love that this computer allows me to run several programs at once and not slow down a bit for anything else I might want to do – I only knew a little about processors and the like but from what I learned - 1.53GHz is plenty of speed for me, thank you very much. It also runs very quietly which although some might think is silly, is very important to me – the only audible noise I hear is the fan at startup and after everything is booted, she’s silent as the night.
The keyboard and mouse follow the silver and black color scheme of the rest of the computer. The mouse is a tad small but I like the sleekness of the keyboard. My only real qualm is that the computer didn’t come with Microsoft Office – but I have a copy so that was okay. All of the other standards you are accustomed to are there: games, notepad, etc. There is also a floppy drive, which I don’t use often at all. It fits neatly beside my desk and I think its fairly slim.
Having mentioned the merge with HP, Compaq has designed this machine (they say) to be much easier and upgrade components although I don’t see myself changing anything anytime soon. My computer did not come with monitor and printer in a bundle, so those reviews will come separately but buying them all at once did allow me a heaping amount of rebates that significantly decreased the amount I ended up paying for my computer.
- Final Thoughts -
I worship this machine. Okay, perhaps worship was a bit strong but I do love it a great deal. It does everything I need, want and then some. It makes my old machine look like a big pile of poo. I know that Compaq might not have the best history – but hopefully the company transition will prove to be a positive one. My computer came with a 1-year warranty, which is standard but just to be safe, I later upgraded to a 3 for a nice chunk of change – but you gotta have support right?
Having said all of that, I LOVE this computer.
