so has the radar detector ever pick up any radar signals from a police car or is it still dead

I'm sure I mentioned that they may not have had the radar turned on though?

NO radar detector will detect police cars. If they don't have their radar turned on you have no warning. I'm not saying that you are wrong, but you can't conclude that the radar detector does not detect radar just because you saw a police car and it didn't go off.
