ZIP disks have their place
Written: Sep 19 '02
Pros:Durable and reliable storage -to be used appropriatly. Inexpensive.
Cons:This is too slow to use as HD, because it is NOT a hard drive.
The Bottom Line: The ZIP disk is a solid backup media solution and performs well in all intended functions.
Amongst so many media storage options (CD-R, DVD-R, etc.) is the ZIP disk obeslete? NO. As we all know CDs and DVDs are prone to scratches which destroy the integrity of the files -I would never trust important data to a CD.
I am a writer paranoid about losing my work due to a HD error, or some other misshap. I have found the ZIP disk to be the most durable and reliable storage media, espeically for small document files. This disks may be dropped down flights of stairs and still funstion perfectly (not reccomended however).
This is not a second Hard Drive, nor as it advertised as one...this is not intended to have programs run from it -it is a reliable storage solution for files currently existing on your hard drive. I save all my documents directly to my ZIP, I enjoy the fact that is is an outside media that will still exist even if my computer has been physically internally destroyed...I have used the same ZIP disk for years (still not full) and it has not failed me yet -I cannot say the same for my experience with CD-R or floppy disk.
For it's INTENDED USE the ZIP disk does an excellent job, it is very inexpensive, easy to use, and something you can trust...it definatly has it's place in today's marketplace.
