I have purchased products from the Sharper Image mall stores, and while their prices are high, the "cool-factor" almost makes up for it. As any self-respecting yuppie knows, the Sharper Image products literally OOZE cool... but I have often avoided Sharper Image products because of their relatively high prices.
So when I stumbled across their on-line store I could not resist. And what do you know, the prices on line were lower than in the mall store in my town. Eureka, I thought, and quickly ordered the 200 disk motorized CD rack I had admired in the store, for almost $100 less than the in-store sticker! Oh yea, finally a discount at the Sharper Image!!
The box arrived relatively quickly. I opened it and the parts fell out onto the ground. Hmm. The product had fallen apart in transit. The instructions showed how it went together again, and after HOURS of trial and error I got it to fit back together. Added the 6 D-cell batteries and it WORKED! That is, until I loaded CDs into it.
No matter how many CDs or how they are loaded, the track falls apart. Every time I try to turn it, it falls apart. No matter how many times or how carefully I put it together, it falls apart. I called the customer service 1-800 number.
45 minutes on hold later, I got someone named Barb on the line who had no idea about the product I own. She suggested I needed to box up the item and return it. I asked if I couldn't just take it to the local Sharper Image store for a return or exchange, and she said, "No, the stores and Sharper Image DOT COM are different entities." Huh? "We sell factory seconds and refurbished products and out of date items, the store only sells new and current products."
Now wait a minute, the web site did not mention this. I cannot find where it says they sell refurbished (i.e. returned by someone else as defective) products. Besides, I had just seen this same unit in the store, so it was still current. I told Barb this and mentioned that I was not happy.
"Sir, all you can do is return the item. It must be packaged in the original factory wrapping and box." It is torn, I tell her. "Whatever, that's the rules if you want another one. Now how else may I help you?"
I got a return number and hung up. I taped the box and inner packaging back together as best as I could, inserted the CD rack parts (keeping my batteries) and went to the post office. The shipping cost was $24.00. It has been three months now and still no refund. I am not happy.
Additional calls to Sharper Image DOT COM have not resolved the situation. Eventually they will do something, I suspect, but meanwhile I am out a couple hundred dollars and my CDs are still stacked on the floor.
Do not buy from Sharper Image dot com.
