| ghrant's Full Review: Sharp MD MT90 MiniDisc Recorder |
Why buy a mini-disc player?
There are many good reasons, and now that I've made the plunge I can't believe I waited so long.
My wife had been bugging me to get some sort of personal audio device to listen to while she worked out at the gym. I procrastinated as I mulled over choices: Tape (obsolete), CD (don't want to wreck my precious discs by taking them out of the house), or MP3 (who want to keep loading and reloading that memory chip with lousy sounding music files?).
I stumbled across this Sharp minidisc player on FutureShop's website (smokin' deal for $169.00 cdn plus shipping and taxes) and decided that this might do the trick.
And did it ever!
I charged up the NiMH rechargeable battery (included), popped an 80 minute disc ($4 cdn), hooked up the fibreoptic cable (included) to my Panasonic DVD player and recorded a CD.
I could not believe the playback quality. It even inserted track numbers for the songs automatically.
This model (md-mt99) also has the extended recording function that will stretch an 80 minute disc to either 160min or 320 min. I've only tried the second slower speed, and found very little sound degradation.
To really enjoy the sound quality I recommend you ditch the headphones. I have been using a pair of Koss PortaPro lightweight headphone for years and they really shine with this unit, though the output from the headphone amp is a little on the low side so some users might not find it "loud" enough
