The Tale of the Beast

Written: Jan 31 '01 (Updated Jan 31 '01)
The Bottom Line: Tolerable for a cheap beer. Not the best, but not the worst, either!

For anyone who may have read my previous homage to PBR, you already know that I am not opposed to cheap beer. Let's get that out of the way first of all. The most expensive beer I ever buy is Amstel Light (and even then only on payday), and that certainly is not very adventurous or gourmet.

That being said, I recently decided to venture out of my admitted PBR rut, and try something new. Standing in the beer aisle of the grocery store, I scanned the cheap beers... apprehensively. You just never know what you might find here. My gaze drifted towards the 6 pack of 16oz Milwaukee's Best Light.... I looked down for the price. $3.79!!! For a 16 oz 6 pack!! Well, you can't go wrong with that... or can you???

When I got home I didn't immediately try out the new beer. To be honest, I was scared. So, to help myself muster up the courage, first I downed my last can of Bud Light. Feeling slightly more adventurous, I slowly opened the fridge and reached for one of the tall cans of "the beast." I popped it open. And....

First sip
Hmmmm. Not bad. Not quite as light and refreshing as the Bud Light. A little bitter... a slight bit flat tasting, but really not half bad.

Second sip
Still... not that bad. Tolerable. However, like the PBR, Milwaukee's Best Light does not seem to compliment food. I put away my chips and salsa.

Halfway through
I'm a little bored with the Beast at this point. The longer it stays open, the flatter it seems to get. It was getting less tasty by the minute. I'd better hurry.

Almost to the bottom
Oops. I think I drank this too fast. I was feeling a little sick now. 16 ounces of cheap beer probably should not be consumed without caution in such a manner. I took a deep breath and leaned back on the couch. I contemplated drinking the last sip, but I knew that it was kind of warm and probably mostly backwash. I don't think so. I threw the rest away.

And thus, my Tale of the Beast ends. I still have 5 more of these things sitting in my fridge and, to be honest with you here, I will probably drink them. Happily ever after?

Epilogue:

Taste
Milwaukee's Best Light is slightly watery and just a tad bitter. If you are accustomed to cheap beers, this will probably not bother you. Don't drink this with a meal though!!! Again, not a food beer!

Price
You really can't beat the price of this stuff. It's cheaper than even the PBR!! A 6 pack will cost you less than 4 bucks, whether you go for the 12 oz pack or the 16 oz goodies. Then again, you know the old saying you get what you pay for???

Respect
For some reason, the Milwaukee's Best-- especially the light version-- isn't going to get you the utmost respect, whether you're in the grocery store line or at a bar. In the drinking world, there's a fine line between being cool and dorky. PBR is cool. Milwaukee's Best is just funny. Interesting sidenote: bring Milwaukee's Best to a party, though, and you'll be the most popular person there!!! Can someone please explain this to me??

Overall, Milwaukee's Best Light isn't really the best anything. You could do a lot worse, but you could also do a lot better. As far as cheap beers go, this is okay stuff, but I am still trying to decide whether I'd ever buy it again!
