| hpvamp's Full Review: Apple Studio Monitor |
Apple's recent price drop of the 15" LCD Studio Display to $799 makes it more attractive than ever. The display itself LOOKS stunning, the clear plastic creating a scene of modern elegance and simplicity. A hinge folds out of the back, and the whole display (including hinge) is less that 7", making it ideal for places where a conventional CRT monitor just couldn't fit.
The image itself is beautiful, transmitted completely in digital form, the image does not go through the distortion-inducing analog to digital conversion that older LCD screens did. The image is consistent, sharp, and flicker-free. Color range is also excellent, though not as good as a CRT (the technology for this does not yet exist), only graphics professionals will notice any difference.
The display comes with a built-in USB hub allowing you to plug in your peripherals (such as mouse and keyboard) directly into it. A power button built onto the screen allows you to turn your computer on or off. The display then in turn plugs into an ADC (apple display connector) socket in new Mac G4s and G4 cubes. Thought this connector allows power, video, and USB signals to be carried through one single cable, the connector is proprietary. Personally, I don't believe this is a good idea because it makes the display incompatible with older systems that lack the ADC port, and could possible render the display obsolete should apple abandon the ADC port. (However, if this happens, 3rd party companies will likely come out with a cable adapter).
