COBRA: King of the Snakes!
by spdster2002 | Oct 14 '02
Pros: 767-like thrust, fully-independant suspension, firm well-supportive seats, cheaper than a Corvette!
Cons: low EPA fuel ratings, harsh ride, long heavy doors, tight rear seats, notchy hard-to-reach shifter

In The Tradition Of The Shelby GT500 King Of The Road, Only Better!! (Reply to this comment)
by johnnycal
Pros
Pinned to the seat acceleration, great handling, fair price.

Cons
Throw and position of shifter.

Bottom Line
The most fun you can have in an American sports car, and the most fun you can have for this price period!

The last car that I owned that even approached this kind of performance was a 1969 Shelby GT 500. I was under the firm impression that the Shelby was as close to a street legal race car as I would ever get. WRONG
As a former SCCA open wheel nationally ranked formula car driver, I have had quite a bit of stick time behind the wheel of very powerful well handling vehicles. As I mentioned earlier, I thought my GT500 was as close to the experience of driving a race car as I was ever going to get on the road. A few years later, I had the opportunity to drive a Porsche 930 Turbo for a couple of days and was duly impressed with it's performance, thinking that it was not only as powerful as the 500, but handled much better. Well, I have now found a car that would run away and hide from either of those former favorites.
This Ford Mustang SVT Cobra convertible which I recently test drove and subsequently bought is as close to driving a race car as the average driver will ever come. It's acceleration is smooth, powerful, seamless, and absolutely gives you the impression that this engine simply doesn't need to take a breath. The cornering is stable, tight, and very predictable if and when you manage to break it loose. The only thing that I find even the slightest bit quirky is the shifter. It could be shorter throw, closer to the driver, and not so notchy. This one minor quirk is HEAVILY outweighed by the many positive things that this car has to offer.
I'm not saying that this is the fastest, quickest, best handling car on the road; but to get anything that the average driver would notice as an improvement would cost a minimum of twice, and very possibly three times the cost of this screamer. And even then, the advantage would be so small, that the average driver would be hard pressed to squeeze that last drop out of whatever that car might be.
As I said in my bottom line comment, this is simply the most fun you can have for this kind of money, period!

Thanks...the supercharged SVT is a very impressive vehicle. Less than 5 seconds 0-60 mph. You should test drive one as soon as possible. I LOVE THIS CAR!!! (But not as much as my T-Bird).
