Nice Movable Paper Towel Holder

Written: Oct 15 '02
Pros:Nice way to hold your paper towels.
Cons:Pole/base construction.
The Bottom Line: Nice portable paper towel holder.

When we bought our last home, I was excited but then I had a little problem. The home had a lack of useable under the cupboard space. I did have a lot of cupboards, but a great deal of them were a window two my family room. Putting a paper towel holder in that space was not an option. I was in a dilemma, we use a lot of paper towels and I needed a holder for them.

On day we just happened upon the best solution to my problem, An Upright Wooden Towel Bar. It would be perfect, I could put my paper towels anywhere. I was so excited, I immediately to my purchase to the salesperson and had her ring it up; only $9.99. Yippeee!

CONSTRUCTION

The paper towel holder is made out of Beachwood. It is a light color wood and blends nicely with most Oak Cabinets. My cabinets were a light Oak and the Beachwood paper towel holder looked like it belonged in my Oak filled kitchen.

The paper towel holder come unassembled, in a small box. It has three parts:

A) The Base - the base is a round piece of wood that the pole screws into, making it an instant paper towel holder. The base has a pre-made screw holder in the middle of it. It is simply a metal piece that is already inserted into the base for ease of assembly of the pole.

B) The Pole - This is the most important part of the paper towel holder. The pole is about eight inches long and screws into the base, making a nice display for your paper towels. At the top and bottom of the pole are two small, maybe 1/2 inches screws that come out from each end. These screws were installed by the factory and make for easy assembly into the base and topper.

C) The Topper - I don't know what this is officially called, but I will call it the topper. This piece is a small round piece of wood that screws into the top of the pole to hold the paper towels in place for easy un-rolling and tearing. The topper has a small pre-made screw holder in the middle of it for easy access. This is what holds your paper towels into place and all you have to do is simply twist the topper on and off to change your paper towels.

PROS

This is the best paper towel holder for people with lack of under the cupboard space or for those who just do not want to screw a stationary paper towel holder into their cupboards.

Movability - The ability to take the holder and move it is wonderful. Sometimes we have spills on the carpet or elsewhere in the house. It is really simple to just run and grab the whole paper towel holder instead of trying to pull a few off of a standard holder. And you don't have to worry about not getting enough paper towels and having to run back to get more.

Design - I think that, although the design is simple, it is a welcoming site to those old fashioned plastic under the cupboard holders. I remember my mother having an old green on, yuck. I know times have changed and they have come up with a lot more "modern" looking paper towel holder, both stationary and upright.

CONS

I really only have one con and it comes with the construction of the paper towel holder. Sometimes the base comes unscrewed from the pole. Over time, when you are screwing and unscrewing the topper to put new paper towels on your holder the pole comes loose from the base. So I have to be aware and keep checking the base and the pole to make sure that it is not loose. There was a time when I was unaware of this defect, that I went to move my paper towel holder and it just fell apart, the base did not move with the rest of the holder. Now I am just careful.

Final Thoughts

I understand why they built the holder the way it is, it takes up less space in the box and on the store shelves. However, I think that a better design would be to have the base and pole permanently adhered together.

Again, this is a nice substitute to the under the cupboard paper towel holders. I would definitely purchase another one.
