| melissasrn's Full Review: Swiffer |
Last year in March 2001, we moved into a new home containing carpet only in the bedrooms. In the rest of the house, we have beautiful hard wood floors instead. Because I was used to carpeting in the majority of our old home, I had no idea how to keep our new hard wood floors clean. Lucky for me, the previous owners of our new home left behind a Swiffer broom as well as a box of refills. So this gave me the perfect opportunity to try it out without having to purchase the Swiffer first.
~~~Set-Up the Swiffer~~~
The Swiffer cleaning system consists of a rectangular plastic base attached to a swiveling handle, which is removable and comes unassembled with purchase. Attaching the dry disposable refill cloths to the Swiffer is easy. Simply place one cloth onto the bottom of the plastic base and bring the corners around to the top of the base, inserting each corner into each of the four "gripper" holes on the top to secure in place. Once this is accomplished, you are ready to try out your new Swiffer.
~~~How the Swiffer Works~~~
Starting in the corner of the room, begin pushing the Swiffer base along the floor as you clean. The thick refill cloths are designed with deep micro-pockets to trap small dirt particles as it moves across the floor. These dry Swiffer disposable cloths also use "electrostatic action" to attract and trap dirt, dust, pet hair, and 93% of common allergens on contact, instead of just stirring them around like an old-fashioned broom does. You will be amazed at all the small particles of dirt the Swiffer broom will pick up, even on a supposedly clean floor! This product is particularly helpful for people that are extra sensitive to excess dust.
~~~Do the Swiffer Test~~~
For those a bit skeptical about just how well the Swiffer broom works, try this test for yourself. Sweep your FRESHLY MOPPED floor with the Swiffer cleaning system and inspect the dry refill cloth when finished. You just THOUGHT your floor was clean! Used on a daily basis, the Swiffer broom will leave your hard wood floors shinier and cleaner than ever before. And all those allergy producing dust particles will be greatly minimized as well.
~~~Purchase Price~~~
Even though my broom was free as I inherited it from the previous owners of our house, I've checked the prices in the store and noticed the Swiffer starter packs are around $10 each. Compared to standard old-fashioned brooms, the cost isn't extraordinarily high. And if you watch your Sunday paper for coupons, you can get a Swiffer for much less as I've seen many for $2 off. If something happened to my Swiffer tomorrow, you can bet I'll be purchasing a new one soon, coupon or no coupon!
~~~Swiffer Refills~~~
The dry disposable refills for the Swiffer cleaning system can be purchased in standard packages of 16 dry cloths for around $4 each. There are larger sizes available as well, but I'm not as familiar with those as all I've bought so far are those containing 16 disposable cloths. Coupons for the Swiffer refills (50 cents to $1 off) can be easily found as well to help with the cost. Depending on how much you use this cleaning system, however, the price of purchasing refills can definitely add up over time.
~~~Helpful Money Saving Advice~~~
To double the usage of the Swiffer disposable cloths, I simply turn the dry cloth over after every use and reattach it to the Swiffer base with the clean side up to use again the next day. So one refill package of these refill cloths lasts well over a month for me instead of just 16 days of cleaning. This way I get double the cleaning power from each refill box.
~~~Swiffer Cons~~~
The only problem I have with my Swiffer broom is that it does not pick up the larger particles of dirt very well as they tend to only get swept around the floor. So I sweep these larger particles along with the Swiffer much like sweeping with a regular broom into a pile and then discard them into a dust pan. Even though this might seem like extra work, it's not any harder than sweeping with a regular broom, yet my floor is much cleaner and shinier as a result.
~~~Other Related Products~~~
Wet refills for the Swiffer cleaning system may be purchased as well, and I use these frequently for quick touch ups in the bathroom and kitchen. I also use these to apply a separate cleanser to my hard wood floors instead of a regular mop, and this works surprisingly well. Also, scented dusting cloths may be purchased if needed.
~~~Overall Recommendation~~~
So if you desire the cleaner and shinier floors that old fashioned brooms just can't deliver, I highly recommend giving Procter & Gamble's Swiffer cleaning system a try. Once you do, it's highly unlikely that you'll ever go back to traditional sweeping methods again! This is truly a revolutionary new way to keep floors cleaner if you don't mind the extra expense of purchasing refill cloths as time goes by.
