Before I bought this item I had no way to see the pictures on my digital camera disk without downloading them from the camera using the software included with the camera. I found this to be time consuming. I knew smart media readers were available, but had never thought seriously about getting one. I found this Lexar model at Wal-mart for about $25, and thought it was worth my time wasted with my camera. The usb connection makes it easy to plug in and go without restarting the computer. Software is included, but I found it not needed for use with XP. I plugged it in my usb port, windows installed the drivers needed and I was ready. I put my media card in the slot and within seconds all my pictures were ready to view. You can also write to the media card with this device. Your computer recognizes it as a removable drive, enabling files to be accessed or written. When you are done, just disconnect the usb jack or leave it plugged in, it does not matter. One downfall is that the media card can be inserted upside down in the reader. The reader has a green light which comes on to let you know the card is being accessed. If the light does not come on, it is probably upside down. This is the only drawback I have seen so far, other than that I feel it is a good product.
