| peterskm's Full Review: Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 120.0GB Int... |
Prior to buying this drive, my PC had a 40 GB Maxtor DiamondMax 7200 RPM drive. This drive was nice and fast. Along comes a deal from Dell for a new Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 120 GB drive with an 8 MB cache for the same price I paid for my Maxtor a few years back (about $130). It was hard to pass up. I had one problem while installing the drive. I was trying to set it up as the master in my system and for some reason I had to set the jumper on the drive to cable select to get it to work. After figuring this out, the rest was cake. As stated in one of the other reviews, this drive's 8 MB of cache really shines on large data operations. The 7200 RPM speed helps access data quicker than the base 5400 RPM models. It has been working flawlessly for about 4 months now and is much quieter than I would have expected. I would recommend this drive to anyone looking for more space. Even if you don't use the 8 MB cache regularly, it's nice to have if you need it since it doesn't seem to bump the cost of the drive higher than other 120 GB 7200 RPM drives with the standard 2 MB cache.
