| hayesfamily's Full Review: ASUS L3800C P4 1700MHz / 40GB / WinXP / Notebook C... |
I have been using this laptop for about 7 weeks now. It has a very solid feel and look. Where should I start?
Screen: The LCD is great! It is crisp, bright, and has great brightness control.
Keyboard: The keyboard has a great feel, and is easy to type one. I would rather have the control key on the very left corner, rather than have the Fn (function) key there with the ctrl key next to it.
Touch pad: The touchpad is just like any other laptops touchpad. The buttons could be raised more, and the scroll buttons could be better engineered. I got used to the right and left buttons, but its easier to use the tap zone to scroll, forget using the buttons.
Drives: The CDRW/DVD drive is normal. Has a light on it to indicate access, unlike some others. The HDD is only a 4200 RPM, but that can be easily if you want a faster 5200 RMP. The floppy drive is normal.
Buttons and lights: There are some hot keys on the top of the laptop that you can push for e-mail, or internet. But the best one is the power mode. This button changes the power mode from low use, to high performance. There is a volume/mute button, but it is not the best. With no onscreen display, and not being analog, its hard to tall where youre at. The mute function is cool though, with a light that comes on when muted. The lights for the HDD access, locks, and power are decent. I would rather have them closer together though.
Battery: The battery life is decent at 2 hours. It is real easy to change it too. But, you can only have one in at a time.
Ports: I love the optical out put, it ads more clarity to the sound, along with true surround sound. There are only 2 USB ports, which is a little low, but it has a PS/2 port. The S-Video is decent. As you change from the CRT, LCD, and TV, there is a display that tells you where you are at. The only disappointing this is there is a time limit, you can only spend so long on each one before it changes over. More ports include, mic, port-bar, serial, IR, parallel, modem, and modem.
Other: I dont like the PCMCIA slots, there are no flip down covers. All you get are place holders. You can easily install more ram or change the processor or HDD from access covers on the bottom. The sound is not very loud, but thats what the laptop is made for. The graphics are nice, and fast!
I do like this laptop, there are minor issues I have, but I can deal with them.
