Got Large or Wide Feet?

The Bottom Line If you have odd-sized feet and need a comfortable walking shoe, buy New Balance shoes.

Buying shoes is murder for me. I have wide feet, and most women's shoes don't come in extra wide. For boots I've gotten into the habit of buying men's boots, because they're the only ones that fit. I know my size in men's shoes much better than I know my size in women's shoes. In fact, for the longest time (before I discovered that men's shoes come in extra wide) I simply thought it was a function of wearing shoes that your feet were supposed to hurt afterward.

Then I decided that I really did need some sneakers. Sandals and combat boots aren't very good for doing lots of walking in; they get fairly hard on your feet. And we were trying to get into the habit of walking to help us lose weight.

So, off we went to the shoe store (Foot Locker, if you're curious).

I wasn't expecting anything, but I asked the helpful shoe-guy if they had any women's walking shoes in extra wide. Lo and behold, they had one single type of shoe - New Balance 606. It's white, and not particularly attractive, but if it'll fit my foot without hurting I'll take it! So I did.

My fiancee has a similar problem: he's very tall and needs large shoes that stores often don't carry. In his case, they had nothing for him. So he went to the New Balance website (www.newbalance.com). No problem! They not only had his size, they had it in the color he wanted.

How They've Worked Out

We love them. They've stood up to the abuse my fiancee puts his shoes through. His last pair (Reeboks) developed big gaping holes by this time, but these are hardly showing any wear at all.

Mine are so comfortable. If I end up taking an unexpected trip out somewhere in my sandals and get blisters on the bottoms of my feet, I just have to slip into my sneakers when I get home, and they cushion and pamper my feet so well that I can go right back out again.

I'm utterly serious here. I ended up wearing my sandals to the zoo in New Orleans (whoops!). When we got back I was in pain, but we had dinner reservations at the Palace Cafe, and there was no way I was going to miss that. I put my sneakers on, and my feet didn't bother me again.

I honestly can't recommend New Balance shoes highly enough.
