| ladykisa's Full Review: Hotel Migny Paris |
I found hotel Migny when looking for something dirt-cheap in Paris. Travelling in my leisure time gives more price restrictions! I found the hotel on cybevasion.com and decided to have a go at it, in spite warnings of cheap hotels in Paris usually being dumps. I proved them wrong!
The hotel is located 10min walk from the charming Montmartre quartier and maybe 5 minutes from the nearest subway so it's well placed. It's not the easest place to find though! Fortunately, I speak french so managed to find the place in the end but it took 3 passers-by. Of course, as befitting a tourist, we hadn't arrived with a map and so couldn't locate the street, using that. A mistake I don't want to make again.
To find it, use the Pigalle train station and try not to be shocked at the the porn signs greeting you at the plaza. Don't worry, the hotel isn't in a street like that. Head down from the station, cross the plaza, keep heading down (ie to the left) until you come down to the street you're looking for, Rue Victor Massé.
Coming from the airport, down to Gare du Nord, it's cheapest to take the subway. You do have to change trains twice I think.
The hotel is quite old and it shows, everything in the rooms is very worn and old and the colours in the bathroom caused gales of laughter. The tiles are perhaps chipped and the sink has some cracks but..everything is 100% clean and tidy.
I paid 70 Euros for a double room and was well pleased. The bed was big and comfortable, there was a tv, a phone (which had some problems)and a spare bed. True, there were no international channels but since we didn't spend any time in the room it didn't make a difference. The room was quite big and spacious, something that came as a surprise. One is used to cubicles rather than rooms when travelling on the continent.
I have no idea how many rooms or floors are in the hotel but I can tell you that it's actually in two connected buildings. We couldn't use the elevator that is in the main building but had to go a little back and up the winding and creaking stairs.
The hotel is located at a small, narrow street and although there are some cars parked there, I wouldn't recommend parking a car there. In fact, I don't recommend it to anyone to drive in Paris! The drivers are ruthless and wont hesitate to push and shove your car when it's parked, in order to squeeze their own behind it or in front. Parking spaces are hard to come by as well. And you don't need it, the metro system is excellent and the buses also.
The hotel lobby is rather small but since one doesn't spend any time there, who cares. Checking in was fast and easy.
The staff was extremely nice and helpful, always ready to answear any question, whether posed in english or french, with a smile and suggestions.
Included in the price was a continental breakfast.
We had the choice between cereal, bagette (bread), cream cheese, butter, several types of jam, milk, tea and coffee. And croissants of course!
All in all, we were well pleased. We were looking for a clean place to sleep, well located, for a good price.
We found what we were looking for and had a fabulous week in Paris.
One more thing, we had heard all the horror stories about the Parisians being a rude bunch, well, we found them to be untrue.
Sometimes I spoke french, sometimes english, sometimes my boyfriend spoke english. Didn't matter, everyone was always smiling and helpful. If you smile and are polite, people are usually friendly. Of course, we don't speak english with an american accent and that might help. They do have a thing against americans. So a little advice for the americans out there: Tone your accent as much down as you can and try not to speak loudly.
Be free to follow this advice or not=) It has nothing to do with pride but everything to do with getting along and wanting things to be smooth.
