Reservations: On-line.
· On a Sunday in November 2002 I used the hotel chains on-line reservation system to book my room only a few hours before I arrived. The website, http://www.comfortinn.com/, was simple to navigate; with just a few clicks to select the hotel location, the dates of my stay, and the type of room I wanted (non-smoking with a queen size bed), I was all set. I received my confirmation e-mail within minutes of the booking.
Location: Close to the highway.
· I drove along Highway 401 to exit 474, Cobourg. The hotel was just south of the off-ramps, which was very convenient but also a bit confusing since the turning lane to go to the hotel is shared with the lane heading to the eastbound on-ramp.
Check-in: Quick.
· When I arrived in the late afternoon the front desk clerk served me immediately. My booking was not yet on their pre-printed guest cards, but the clerk quickly found the details of my on-line reservation. She confirmed that I really did want a room on the second floor, I did, and then asked if I had any questions, I did not, so she handed me my room card and I was on my way.
The Room: Quiet, clean, and comfortable.
· I had asked for the second floor in the hopes that being on the top floor would be quieter than being on the ground floor. It was very quiet, in fact I never heard another guest, which may have been due to the fact that the hotel was not full.
· The bathroom was clean. There were no mildew or mysterious stains on the counter. The tub of the one-piece tub-shower combination had a built in backrest.
· The main room was also clean, and it had a bed that Goldilocks would have been happy with. There was also a sitting area with a desk and comfortable sofa.
A word of warning: Trains.
· Cobourg is one of many towns along this stretch of highway 401 that is within whistling distance of the railroad tracks. Regardless of which hotel you use in the area you will probably hear the train whistles several times during your stay.
Food: Continental breakfast.
· The hotel does not have a restaurant, but a continental breakfast was offered for an additional three dollars. You must buy a meal ticket from the front desk clerk, so you could probably take a look at the selection before deciding where to eat. I did not stay for breakfast, but that is only because I am addicted to Tim Hortons coffee so since there was a drive-thru just down the street I went there instead.
· Along with the Tim Hortons there are several other fast-food restaurant chains within a ten-minute drive from the hotel.
· If you are looking for a sit-down, full-service lunch or dinner then I recommend the Oasis Bar and Grill; which is also only about ten minutes away. They serve everything from crab cakes to pasta to steak. The daily specials and the soups have always been delicious.
Check-out: Quick.
· The hotel did not have a Check-out-From-The-TV feature that I have seen at other chains, so I did have to stop by the front-desk on my way out. Checking-out was just as quick as checking-in, plus I was given complimentary copies of two local newspapers.
What made it special: It smelled nice.
· The scent of the hotel may be one of the last things to consider when it comes to choosing where to stay, but this location was notable for its nice smell. Not only did the public areas lack the unpleasant bleach smell found in many hotels, but also the hallways were lightly scented with vanilla. Another reason for the freshness of the air was probably the fact that the entire wing in which I stayed was non-smoking.
Would I stay here again? Yes.
