Nice car! (Reply to this comment)
by bettega
Glad to hear the SVT Cobra is decent. I drove an '04 GT which did not impress me in the least!
I like your review style. As you might glean from my profile, I am an avid car enthusiast. I think there are a lot of good reviews here that deserve VH, but many of them just talk about "nice seats" or "smooth ride" and that's too bad. I want to hear about POWERSLIDES and how the shifter feels blowing through the gears... heh heh.
Take care, and enjoy your current beasts!
Regards
Bettega

Excellent Review..... (Reply to this comment)
by svt_amateur
....though I have to disagree. I love how you talked about everything on the car, but I myself believe that the Saleen is an overpriced car for what you get (power, transmission, etc.). The only thing the Saleen beats the cobra at is looks, and that is the one thing I wish SVT would change about the Cobra (it looks too much like a stock mustang, especially from a distance). But all in all great review, and I'm sure you had a hard time picking out which one you liked better. Thanks for the read.

Saleen's just a name. (Reply to this comment)
by noparking
Steve Saleen had a good thing going one time; EXCLUSIVITY!
But it's been diluted ever since he went for the buck. C'mon, they have a SIX CYLINDER now!!! Anyone who wants to can buy the decals and bodyparts and that's when I lost interest in Saleen. It stopped having any meaning.
Truth is you can add the same parts yourself for a fraction of the "markup" of the Saleen name.
They ARE fast cars, IF it is the RIGHT model. OR if it isn't a fake!!!!
Of course there'll probably be a bunch of "fake" SVTs soon anyways!! But at least Ford don't condone and encourage it!!!
I've actually seen an older Mustang with hood pins and "SVT" emblems on it!! HAHAHA.
The SVT's a good try, you don't have to be so snotty about it. Unfortunately your trying to be a self proclaimed expert bleeds through an otherwise excellant review!
If you need more power by the way, Kennebell makes a bolt-on replacement supercharger that'll add 100 HP. Now THAT should be fun!!!!
Den.

Mustangs... yeah! (Reply to this comment)

Great, very thorough review. I happen to be a Mustang fanatic myself, but don't worry about me taking anything that you or anyone else said about them offensively. I understand everyone does have their own opinions, hence the name of this site, as well as understanding that there are cars out there better than my favorites.
Anyways, thanks for writing this, I really needed to get up-to-date with my Mustang knowledge. It will most likely affect my decisions about detailing my own when I actually do get one. Heh.

If you read the review more closely, I never said it shares the same engine with the GT- it was pretty clearly specified, and you seemed to have missed two of the most important performance features of the engine, the journals and the tumble-port induction, which actually makes a huge difference.
Also, you seem to get very defensive at any critique on this car, perhaps it's because you own one? I never said it's a bad car, I simply said that for the money, you can do better. I'll admit, the 2003 Cobra is a very impressive automobile, but it is still a Mustang -- dress it up however you like, but for that matter, the Saleen is still just a mustang as well - the bulk of the reason I prefer the Saleen is because suspension wise, the Saleen has almost perfect feedback and feels alot more solid in corner entries and overall predictability -- tracion control or not, the Cobra just doesn't feel as centered and as solid, and most importantly, because the semi-vague feedback (in comparison) it just feels like you never know when the damned thing is going to break loose.
Don't take this review so personally - SVT has built a very impressive automobile, but you have to consider the starting point... I myself, having driven a myriad of comparable sports cars, feel you can do much better for the buck in terms of the overall package, but naturally, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so good luck with your SVT Cobra.

Sound System (Reply to this comment)
by ironcow13
I liked the review a lot. Excellent work. I have one question though, is the mach's sub woofer any good? I know it is a sports car, but with that kind of ride you need a nice bass sound to roll into school (or work at the investment bank) with. If you ever talk about it I would appreciate an email.

Good write up but... (Reply to this comment)
by chrisfll
I own a 2003 SVT Cobra and I feel compelled to clarify a couple of points you missed.
First the SVT Cobra does NOT share the same engine as the GT. The GT and the Saleen S281 have a 16-valve single overhead cam V8. The GT churns out 260hp and the Saleen 285hp.
The '03 SVT Cobra has a 32-valve, dual overhead cam V-8 that churns out 320hp w/o the supercharger (2001 model - Ford never produced a 2002 Cobra) and 390hp with it (2003 model). In addition, the SVT Cobra engines are hand built and bears the signatures of its two builders on a plaque that has been mounted on the left valve cover.
The GT and the Saleen have a "live" axle at the rear wheels. The SVT Cobra has an independent rear suspension with an aluminum alloy control arms and is linked to an aluminum alloy drive shaft.
If your car is spinning the wheels, it will stop when you turn on the traction control system.
Finally the SVT Cobra has a 6-speed Tremec transmission. The GT and the Saleen both share the same 5-speed.
I just did not feel you clarified why you thought the Saleen was a better car.

Laughs...There are alot of Ford Fanatics out there, and at the very mention that a Ford product has a shortcoming, they get defensive and irate! I just didn't want to see any closed mindedness at the very notion that the Cobra is NOT the end-all of American sports cars -- To add more fuel to the fire, ESPECIALLY when a Chevy product gets mentioned, things really get heated. Anyhow, that's what the opening statement was all about - the rest of the cars great details are in the review. Thanks for checking it out!

I was really impressed with your informative review, but I am left wondering what is with your opening statement?
