I loved my Northgate Omnikey 102, but the keys were becoming sticky. After researching the topic, I found the Avant-Stellar reproduction of the Northgate keyboard for sale by Creative Technologies. The price with shipping is $200, which is quite a bit compared to the $10 disposable keyboards that come with most computers.
If you spend most of your day in front of a computer, the extra bucks for the keyboard and a good monitor are definitely worth the price. I don't understand why people will spend this much to upgrade the sound card and speakers. This keyboard has a great touch, allows for much more accurate typing, and should prevent repetitive stress injury because of the progressive tactile feedback.
Another plus is that the keyboard has the function keys along the left side, which is much easier to use (my opinion) than the usual upper row. It adds about 4 inches to the width of the keyboard, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make.
The CTRL key can be exchanged with the CAPS LOCK key, which is a layout that I prefer, as I do use the CTRL key frequently for cutting and pasting, and use the CAPS LOCK only by accident!
It is easy to program macros into the keyboard but the keystroke combination is a little bizarre (4 x rt ctrl and Left Shift 1, M) but I guess one is not likely to hit those keys by mistake.
The key clicks are a pleasure for those of us who were raised on the original IBM mechanical keyboards, but may drive the rest of the household crazy for those late-night sessions.
In summary, this is the best keyboard on the market. It is an expensive, but affordable, luxury. If it holds up as well as the original Northgate keyboards, it should last for 10-15 years.
