Pros: Shallow footprint; almost flat screen; black color; built-in speakers; built-in microphone.
Cons: Almost flat screen; built-in speakers.
The Bottom Line: If desktop space is a concern, the G90 is an excellent choice for someone wanting a 19" CRT monitor at a decent price.

| deanbrew's Full Review: ViewSonic G90mb (Black) 19" CRT Monitor |
My workspace in my home office is a 28" deep built-in desktop. I wanted to upgrade from a 17" monitor to a 19", but I couldn't afford to give up any more depth on my desktop. And most monitors are about as deep as the screen diagonal distance - most 17" CRT monitors are about 16 to 17 inches deep and most 19" CRT monitors are about 18 to 19 inches deep. I didn't want to have a monitor on my desk that is 18.5" deep.
I looked and looked on the internet and finally discovered that Viewsonic had what they refer to as "shallow depth" monitors. They offer the G90 in both putty and black colors, which is good because my new computer is black and I really didn't want to buy a new putty-colored monitor. Some other shallow depth monitors only come in putty.
The G90 has a depth of 16.5 inches, almost identical to the 17" monitor I was getting rid of. I looked at some flat-screen LCD monitors, but I didn't like the text quality as well as on traditional CRT monitors. I also didn't like the prices - what I paid for this 19" monitor would have only bought a 15" LCD monitor.
The monitor has a flatter screen than my old one, but it is not as flat as some other new monitors. Reflections are not a problem in my office, so this is not much of a drawback to me, but it might be to some others. I'm not a monitor expert, but the picture quality looks good to me, and I don't notice any flicker in low-light situations or when I see the monitor in my peripheral vision (two situations where I noticed flicker in my old monitor). The adjustments seem good on the G90, with plenty of brightness and contrast control left both up and down. The monitor comes with color-correction software, and the colors look very good on photos I've taken and displayed on the monitor.
The monitor has built-in speakers, which is good to a point. If you want just basic computer speakers and are not interested in having great sound quality, the built-in speakers are OK. They don't sound the best, however, and I just ordered a Klipsch speaker system. Still, having the speakers and a microphone built into the monitor is a great convenience feature.
