Many moons ago I think about a year and a half I wrote an epinion on Homeruns. Homeruns offered a grocery shopping and delivery service here in Boston that meant that I could shop via internet and have my groceries delivered for about the same money I would spend to go get my groceries and bring them home. However, I could shop at any hour of the day or night and schedule a delivery time that worked with my schedule and I never had to haul heavy bags up flights of stairs.
Sadly, Homeruns couldnt make a go of its service here in Boston and they closed down about a year ago. That left Peapod.com as the only game in town.
I admit that I was skeptical about Peapod. They are part of the Stop & Shop chain here in New England and I have not been impressed with my local Stop & Shop. They charged a delivery fee that was high ($7.95 for orders below $75- although that has changed to a minimum order with a $4.95 charge). Also, being the suspicious person that I am, I suspected they would take gross advantage of being the only delivery service in town.
I was very wrong! I have been using Peapod for over a year now and am very pleased.
The procedure for using Peapod is to go online. You can shop by aisles, categories or type in what you are looking for. You add said items to your cart in the amounts you want (1 can of chicken broth and 2 boxes of confectioners sugar). Once you have completed your order, you fill in a delivery time, payment type (check or credit card) and complete your transaction. Delivery times are in two hour windows and they bring the food to your home. You have to take it out of the bags and put it away. They accept coupons.
There are a few things I would like to see changed - like getting specific items, but there is a suggestion box.
I shop through Peapod every four to six weeks. I use it for staples and heavy stuff and get my fruits and vegetables on a weekly basis in small local markets or in my local farmers market I really prefer picking out my own fruits and vegetables and I like supporting local businesses. I also shop for meat at the local whole foods market because I want organic meat and Peapod only seems to have organic beef hopefully that will change in time. However, for the paper towels and the canned tomatoes and the flour and sugar and everything else, I use Peapod.
Being able to make up my list and have it delivered when I want it, is worth the $4.95 and not having to relay it from the trunk to the sidewalk to my apartment is even more worth it. Until you can tell me of an easier way to get food from the store to my refrigerator, I will be sticking with Peapod.
