Look no further Google is here; all other search engines can bow down to the power and uncanny accuracy of this simply interfaced but very powerful search engine.
Even the legendary Yahoo search engine can’t stand up to the accuracy of Google. In fact the Yahoo search is now rerouted through the Google search (powered by Google). In fact the engineers of Google have so much faith in their baby (and rightfully so) that they have added an "I'm feeling lucky button". This simple add on sends you to the site that Google believes to be most accurate.
Now the reason that Google is so powerful and accurate is because of the way it searches. Unlike typical search engines, which look for keywords on sites, Google looks for relative links on that site. Basically a typical search engine looks for specific words on a site, which is the reason that you often get a porn site when you are trying to find quilts (extreme example but it does happen). You see web designers can put key words on the site, the same color as the background and you don’t see them when you're on the site, however the search engine does.
Now Google is smart, it doesn’t trust the web developers. It checks for several factors, first the site URL (looks for keywords there) then it looks at the links on the site that it found to make sure that they also relate to the topic you are searching for and then it looks for keywords on the site. Only after these factors coincide does Google consider the site a good find.
The only thing missing in Google is an open directory for which Yahoo became famous. Basically an open directory is a bunch of bookmarks, and the search engine searches its own bookmarks for relevancy. Now back to the "I'm feeling Lucky" button, I have used it on many occasions, and more often then not the site has information relating to the topic I am looking for and if not that sit, then a link on that site does. So it’s a win win situation.
Another positive aspect of Google is the simple interface. The engineers actually stuck to the term "Search Engine" they didn’t make it into a community like AltaVista or Excite, you simply search and find. They do have a banner on it, but can you blame them? After all they do need money. Also almost forgot, they say that you search over a billion sites so that’s excellent and they filter out for dead links every day, I've found very few in the several months I've used Google.
In the end this has become my favorite Internet search tool. Simple, not flashy and incredibly accurate. Amazes me every time and I highly recommend that you try it.
