| sweetsue_98's Full Review: Dish Network DishPlayer 500 Channel Satellite Syst... |
We had our first experience with satellite television while we were living in a somewhat rural area in southern Missouri. For 2 1/2 years we enjoyed the service that was provided.
At that time you had to buy the dish, and receivers (I say receivers because if you have only one, then every TV in the house is on the same channel)plus installation, so we ended up spending about $369 for the package. It was much better because we did not have to install an antenna due to the distance and poor reception of the local channels. We were able to get our major channels, ABC, NBC,CBS,FOX, and PBS by paying an extra $4.95 per month out of New York City.
We had a package that included all the channels, plus the CD package for about $36 per month. We did not subscribe to HBO or any of the premium packages because we do not watch that much TV, and you could easily spent $60 a month if you got all the extras. All in all, we were very happy with our service and the selection of channels. I especially enjoyed BBC, Home and Garden, The Food Channel, and a few others that would not be on your standard lineup.
The best part of Dish Network was the wonderful on screen menu that was easy to use with the remote control, and you would see almost 24 hours ahead what was on the schedule. There was no TV Guide or newspaper to mess with when you wanted to know when your favorite program was on. With just one flip of a button you could check ahead, get a description of the show, check what was on Pay per View, etc.
The Pay per View was originally $2.99 for a movie, but the last 6 months the price was raised to $3.99. We liked the convenience of not having to drive 30 minutes to check out a movie and return it.
The reception was excellent unless their was a bad rain storm, and then the signal would be lost until the weather cleared up. This was a rare happening, and usually lasted a short time.
Dish Network had offered a wonderful plan for people that were moving. They advertised if you leave your dish at your home and take the receivers, they would install a new dish at no charge at your new residence. Well, they changed the plan! We took our receivers, left our dish, and then they wanted $100 to put the new one in. So was was supposed to be free wasn't. We now have cable.
I do miss Dish Network! I liked the features that I mentioned, but when a company changes their "policy", and doesn't tell you until it's too late, then they are not going to get my business. I was able to sell the receivers and recoup some of our initial investment.
