There are 4 kinds of popular messengers on the net. They are all free.
AOL, MSN, PAL, YAHOO messenger.
Among all, Pal from excite.com has been taken out from my list.
All seem to off the same things until I had my router installed onto my pc. I noticed the big difference of all messengers.
Chat
They all offer the same basic feature.
Chat!
However, There are differences in Chat. All of them have regular chats, and conference chats. Yea, you basically type the same things; however, Yahoo messenger offers lots of features that no other messenger can offer.
Offline messages
Oops, my bossed just walked by. What's my co-worker just said? I just closed my messenger! Thanks to yahoo offline messages. After my boss walked away, I found out it's the message from my co-worker telling me that "Boss is approaching!" What a convenient way to message. For short messages, you don't have to use email. An offline message from yahoo messenger will do the job.
Ding Dong ... Anybody home?
Yahoo messenger also offers "Buzz" feature. I want to make sure other party is there before I send my message. I do not want to send some messages that someone else will see it. So, I want to "buzz" my friend first. That gives a better and security feature in terms of chatting. Of course, when it buzzes, it sounds. If it sounds, people can hear. In that case, it may not be a good idea to use it at work. However, it's best idea while you are home and running some errand and you need to buzz your friend. Maybe you want to buzz your friend to talk pc to pc.
PC TO PC
What a better way to save long distance call money!! All you need are speakers/headsets and microphones. You are ready to talk even overseas to overseas. You can also see your friends face to face by using the build-in video function.
Video
If you use aim or msn, you have to download Net-meeting. Yahoo has the video chat that is built in. All you need is click on it so other parties can view you. You can do a self view window as well. It's a pretty cool idea to chat!! Of course, you want to send file as well.
File Transfer/mail notification
It's always better if you are doing the chatting while transferring your photos, files, to your friends. Of course, Yahoo messenger also provides mail notification. If you have mail, one click will bring you to the yahoo mail website. You may have to log in again. In the meantime, you may want to play games while chatting. Possible?
IM environment
It's possible if you are using yahoo. They have something called IM environment. You can play games also. It depends on what IM environment you download. Different IM environment has different buzz sound. Some of them may have different games as well. My favorite is the karate game. The IM environment basically is a background of the chat window. If you change it, the other party will be changed accordingly. Of course, you can download different environments from yahoo.com. They have lots of environment to choose from. Speaking of download, what if I am using company computer and won't allow me to download software?
Fear not, there is a something called JAVA or IE pop up messenger. You can launcher from the site. You have to go to www.yahoo.com, and go to connect and you will see messenger, and from there, pick JAVA. At first, I didn't know, but I found out eventually. Yahoo should make it better, AIM did a better job in this case. They have something call quick buddy or express. They explain better than Yahoo so called "JAVA". **However, Just lately, about a week ago, they made another modification on the site. They added something called Web Messenger.
Java
Basically, it is the same thing. But it has limitation. You can only do simply chatting which is typing text.
Why I choose Yahoo?
Lately I installed a router at home. I tried to open ports for aim and/or msn, it does not work for file transfer and video chat for them at all. However, Yahoo messenger will let me do everything even-though I have no ports open. It's very good to work as normal and all my other pcs that are connected to the router can do the same thing. However, aim and msn won't let me do voice chat, file transfer once I had the router installed.
Disadvantage
The major disadvantage is the compatibility. It is not compatible with all other messengers. So, I will have so many installed in my computers.
The Best thing about Yahoo messenger
Of course, if it is free, it is the best!!! But comparing so many free products. Yahoo messenger is the best of the best.
Conclusion
I have spread around words about yahoo messenger. Some of my friends/relatives are now using yahoo messenger. It's because it is the best and with most features product you have ever found!!! However, it seem AIM still beats Yahoo due to its popularity.
