The Bottom Line Children's Book of the Month Club is a wonderful way to build or add to your child's library.

When my son was born in February of 1999, I received tons of things in the mail about babies, and this was one of them. At the time, the Children's Book of the Month Club was the same as any other book club. You bought four books for $1 (plus shipping)and with that, received a free gift. I figured, "why not?" and signed up.

First, they give you a great catalog to choose from. The books are listed by age of the child, from birth to age 12. The catalog offers a wonderful explanation of each book so you really know what you're buying. You pick the four that you want, and mail the card. You receive your shipment within 3 weeks of mailing the card.

The books I received were better than I expected. They were all hardback, baby-like books with beautiful pictures and rhyming words. The free gift I received was a back pack (child size, of course) to hold the books in. They also sent a free book light, which I wasn't expecting. The books they offer vary from educational to fun to just plain silly. My son has enjoyed all the books I've purchased for him!

Once you are a member, they send you a new catalog monthly, based on your child's age. Like any other book club, they offered "featured selections"--in other words, you had to send the card back if you did NOT want the selections they picked for you. Recently, I am glad to say, they stopped doing that. Now you only send the card back if you WANT the selections.

The Children's Book of the Month club also has a 1-800 number that you can call to order books or make payments. If you order a book, they give you the opportunity to pay by credit card or be billed. They also ask if you would like the books gift wrapped (for a fee, of course), or even sent to another address.

Another feature they have are what they call "treasure points." You earn so many points per book you purchase, which can be used towards another book purchase. If you have 5 treasure points, you can choose one book at half-off the club price. I've used this and it really does work.

Occasionally, for holidays, they offer 'free' gifts... cute little things that you pay only shipping for. For example, for Valentine's Day, they offered a card-making kit, and for Christmas, they offered a snowflake frame.

The club also offers some books for parents, too. I purchased one named "Baby Days" which is a book about projects and activities you can do with your newborn and/or toddler, up to age 5.

I've been a member for almost two years now and I can honestly say I haven't been happier with any other book club (and I think I've belonged to them all). It's a reasonably priced way to build a beautiful library for your child. I would recommend this club to parents that have any age child.
