Children's Book of the Month Club is a wonderful way to build or add to your child's library.

What a rip-off! (Reply to this comment)

They overcharge for shipping and trick you into thinking the books are a cost effective way to build your child's library. i wanted to cancel but they refused to let me several times, they wouldn't even accept that i was no longer authorizing my credit card to be billed. Then they stopped sending me the featured selection emails so i couldn't decline anything so they could automatically send me expensive selections that i wasn't authorizing billing for. They didn't even keep an updated history of what and when things were shipping on the website so i can't see it until it's too late. How do i get out of this mess? i can't stop them from scamming me!!!

I ordered what was supposed to be 8 books for a total of $2 plus shipping & handling which sounded great. First of all the s&h they charged me was double the total of my books, I got 8 at $.25 and 2 at $4.95 and was expecting about $12 for the books and maybe an extra $5 for shipping but shipping was about $23!!!!! I have shipped MANY books before and it is VERY, VERY cheap, the postal service (which is who they ship through) gives you a HUGE deal on shipping books. As if this outragious shipping price isn't bad enough when I look under my order details it say that my subtotal is about $21 with $122 for shipping which brings 10 books to a grand total of about $143!!!! And I thought I was getting them for around $12! I called and they told me that they show my balance as being only $35 (which is still ridiculous) and that they would send me pre-paid postage to send the order back and once they receive it, they will cancel my membership. I will be happy enough if that all happens smoothly but I am anticipating quite a few more problems with them before getting it all settled but who knows, maybe they'll surprise me, I'll let you know.:)

Children's Book Club of the Month is a scam! (Reply to this comment)

I would read the membership agreement very carefully before signing up, so that you understand the commitments! I signed up to receive books for my son. It was great to get 6 books for $2 and I also bought an extra 2 books for $4.95, so I only had to buy 3 more books to fulfill the 5 book commitment. It cost about $24 for just shipping these books to me. The problem now is that the last 3 books have to be at least $9.99 and not on sale. I figured this out after ordering 3 books and figuring out afterwards that 1 book that I bought didn't count. So now I have to buy another book and pay for shipping. It is a real hassle remembering to decline monthly main selections and If you don't do it within like 10 days, they'll send it out to you. I will fulfill my commitment with them and then cancel my membership. I do admit there are some good deals, but when you account for the shipping, you can find the same books cheaper at local stores. It isn't worth the hassle!

I have been in the Children's Book-of-the-Month Club for 2 years. I still have to send in a card every month, they don't have a web site to refuse the books on so I have to pay for a stamp each time and try to remember to send it before the deadline or I'll get the book anyway. The books are quality books I agree but I have found the same quality books at Target, or the local books store and if you buy them at Target you don't pay shipping! I am going to cancel my membership for these reasons.

No cards to return! (Reply to this comment)

I like that. I've noticed more book and music clubs are going that way. It is a pain to have to keep sending those cards back each month.

Trevor has a membership through his grandmother. He's received so many great books this way. Many of which I've reviewed here so it's good for me too. :)
