As a person living in Canada and interested in Canadian stocks, I saw no use for Yahoo finance for one main reason. That reason was that Yahoo did not have a big focus on Canadian stocks. The message boards have very few posters compared to Canadian financial websites such as stockhouse.ca.

My Attraction to Yahoo Finance
Soon I got a small interest in American stocks, but more specifically on the Nasdaq. It amazed me on how a stock on the Nasdaq could go from say $1 to $5 in one day. The stocks on the Nasdaq are also highly traded compared to their Canadian counterparts.

What attracted me to Yahoo Finance was the fact that they had what they called "Real Time ECN." I just see this as Real Time Quotes or RTQ. I found this useful because my regular site, stockhouse.ca, did not have this feature.

What I Didn't Particularly Like About Yahoo Finance
Once I discovered Yahoo Finance's RTQ service, I decided to check out their other services. One service that I found really useful was Message Board. I loved Message Boards or Bullboards as they are called at stockhouse, because I could see what other people thought about a particular stock.

I was use to stockhouse's bullboards and when I went to Yahoo Finance's message boards, I was extremely surprised at the amount of advertisement in the messages. I mean I would find a message that says, "BIG NEWS!! MUST READ!!" When I opened the message it was a link to some other site. When I went to that site, nothing about that stock. Just a financial service I don't really need.

Compared to stockhouse, Yahoo Finance does not monitor their boards. I think this is because Yahoo Finance is based in the states and stockhouse in Canada. I don't mind the ads on the Yahoo Finance's Message Boards, but what does bug me is that sometimes people insult others with rude and uncalled for phrases. I do not approve of that and because of that reason I try to avoid Yahoo Finance's Message Boards altogether.


The reason I do not recommend Yahoo Finance
The main reason that I do not recommend Yahoo Finance is because I can find what I need somewhere else besides Yahoo Finance. News stories news releases I can find at another site I use frequently. The only reason I use Yahoo Finance is again, for their Real Time Quotes. Another reason I don't specifically use their message boards because about a quarter of their messages are trash. At stockhouse, almost all their messages are constructive and when they aren't they are taken off, unlike Yahoo Finance.
