| mountainhigh's Full Review: Kenmore Power Miser 9, 50 gallon Electric Water He... |
I never gave it much thought when I saw the hot water tank in my sons bedroom closet in his 2-bedroom condo, until yesterday when I was helping my son pack up to move back home. I always saw it there and wondered who came up with the idea of placing the hot water tank in a bedroom closet when the logical space would be in the entry hallway closet.
Upon giving a more thorough look, I discovered that the hot water heater was the same brand as ours with the exception that ours is a 80 gallon tank and this one is the Kenmore 50 Gallon, Model 32756.
I guess I understand now why his electric bills have been so reasonable running at an average of $34 a month. A lot has to do with the 3 inches of foam insulation that this unit offers. This keeps the hot water in the tank hotter longer and also helps with a quick recovery.
In fact, looking at the yellow sticker on the hot water tank, the tank rates a 5.7 on the energy efficient rating chart and estimated costs of running it per year based on 8.41 cents per kW/H is $410.
Specifications and Features
Like mine, this is a Kenmore Power Miser 9 which offers the following features per the Sears website (since the owner's manual was not there) and I wanted to make sure it has what I have with my 80 gallon tank.
There are two heating elements that are called Super Limeguard (trade marked) that offers resistance to lime build up. The lower element handles normal needs, while the upper element responds to higher demand.
An anode rod in the glass lined steel tank helps prevent corrosion.
The dip tube, trade marked as PEX Roto-Swirl, is self-cleaning and helps prevent mineral clean up in tank.
First hour recovery rating is 65 gallons.
There is a temperature and pressure relief valve.
The panel for changing of the temperature control is on the front of the unit and is easily accessible.
The hot water tank operates off of a 240 volt and is 5500 watts. The amp required is 30. This particular tank offers an alternate power of 240 volts at 3800 watts with a 20-amp requirement.
The height is 58 1/2 inches with the diameter measuring at 21 inches.
The warranty is 1-year parts and labor and thereafter it is based on 9 years limited parts.
Impressions
Having owned Kenmore Hot Water Tanks in several of our homes and currently owning the bigger version of this one, I can say with the greatest of confidence that Kenmore's hot water tanks have always been reliable for us and I would not hesitate to highly recommend this one.
Every time that I have gone to my son's condo (which is often), the water has always been piping hot.
Upon questioning my son if he could hear the hot water tank turn on and off (since it is in his closet), he said no.
I asked if they have ever ran out of hot water and his response was "one time" when his room mate left the shower running while talking on the phone, however it did not take very long to heat the tank back up.
I am sure you will be extremely pleased should you buy a Kenmore Hot Water Heater.
Two key factors to remember when researching on hot water tanks (other than reliability) are insulation for energy savings and quick recovery time when hot water is depleted.
Thank you for reading my review, and I hope you have found it helpful in your purchasing decision.
