The Bottom Line It doesn't take a wallet full of money to make the day special for your sweetheart. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

If you’re like most men, Valentine’s Day is a holiday fraught with anxiety. When it comes to gift giving, you’re not sure what to do. For example, if you give her candy, will she complain that you’re not supporting her dieting efforts? If you don’t give candy, will she misread the gesture and think that you didn’t give candy because you thought she was too fat? What’s a well meaning—yet confused—man supposed to do?

First of all, let’s clear up one misconception about Valentine’s Day. For most women, it’s not what you give; it’s the time and effort you put into this day. That old adage—“It’s the thought that counts”—especially applies to this holiday. Most women have a deep craving to be loved, cherished and appreciated. To many, the best way to show these feelings is with romantic little gestures—gestures that say “I’ve been thinking about you and you’re the most important person in my life.

Many of you complain that you are not creative and can’t think like that. So, to help you survive the holiday, here are a few ideas:

1) Sneak a few Hershey’s kisses and a silly children’s valentine into her briefcase for her to discover when she arrives at work.

2) Prepare a special box lunch for her on Valentine’s Day. Find a red box or basket and fill it with food items that follow a Valentine’s theme because they are either red, pink, heart-shaped, etc. Some examples might include a thermos of tomato soup, little sandwiches cut with a heart-shaped cookie cutter, a box of cranberry juice cocktail, a heart shaped cake or sugar cookie. (If she works at home or is a full-time mother, hide the box/basket in the refrigerator with strict instructions that she can't open it until lunchtime.)

3) Leave a mushy message on her voice mail at work.

4) Write a short poem or love letter on a piece of red construction paper. Then make a puzzle by cutting the construction paper into eight pieces. Put each piece in a separate red or pink envelope and seal it. Tell her she can open one envelope for each hour while she’s at work. Throughout the day she will slowly put the puzzle together. At the end of the day she can read the message on the puzzle.

5) Get up early on Valentine’s Day, fill a thermos with hot coffee, and take her someplace where you can watch the sunrise together. Or in the evening, go to a snow-covered open field and watch the sunset. On the way home, pick up a pizza and a bottle of wine and dine by candlelight.

As you can see, it’s not the amount of money that you spend, but the time and effort you put into your Valentine’s Day surprise. So go ahead and do it—make this Valentine’s Day a holiday that she will always cherish and remember!
