I am a song writer and needed a small, light recorder for putting down song ideas. This unit fits the bill. I bought the 4 hour version, not the 9 hour version, and is less cost. Don't think there is any difference other than total time available. Found it new on E-bay, offered @ $55 and got it for $61. Sound quality is not very good. Maybe it is the tiny built in mike, or the tiny built in speaker or the cheap A/D chip, or a combination. Quality might be improved by using the mike input with a better mike or by outputing the recordings to a stereo or computer. Picks up any background noise and any movement of your fingers on the unit. Make sure background noise is at a minimum, mike is omni-directional and very sensitive. There are 2 recording quality options, SP and LP. Could hardly tell any difference between the 2. Don't get me wrong, what you say into it is understandable on playback, and will probably work for lecture notes, but don't plan to record music with it.
Output is mono audio. Even though it comes with software, don't be fooled. It isn't USB like an MP3 player. Just a regular audio out to plug into your soundcard line-in jack. You than can save the files as "wavs". I haven't tried it, but I wouldn't plan on downloading to a PC and using voice recognition software to turn into text. I have a feeling the sound quality might be an issue.
Cool feature: The ARS works pretty good with 2 sensitivity settings. Turns off when there is no input and back on as soon as there is. Looks like the included phone jack adapter would work for all you spies out there. Of course it is against the law, but you could hide the unit behind the couch, turn on the ARS and record all telephone conversations on a particular phone.
No record volume adjust. Playback only.
Simple controls for scrolling through messages and folders (4 max).
"Hold" feature allows all buttons to be deactivated.
