The Best Meat Sandwich in America

Feb 04 '01 (Updated Jan 25 '02)

The Bottom Line If you live within 100 miles of the northern Maryland border, take a road trip to Fast Eddie's -- you won't regret it!

I travel a lot on business, and I enjoy dining in fine restaurants. But I also enjoy discovering local places that offer "something special" no matter whether it is a four-star gourmet experience or a so-called greasy spoon with an exceptional item on the menu.

If you are traveling through Maryland on Interstate 95, don't you dare stop for food at one of the travel plazas. Instead, look for the Aberdeen exit (in northern Maryland, near the Delaware border) and follow the exit into town. Go past the national brand fast food joints and look for Fast Eddie's Pit Beef on the right. (The address is 70 W. Belair Avenue.) There has been some changes to the traffic flow in the past year, if you go down the hill past the commercial district, you've gone too far.

The menu is simple -- pit-roasted meat sandwiches and just enough side dishes. There are NO seats in Fast Eddie's. If you want to eat "in" you'll have to stand at the bar. There are a couple of picnic tables outside, an option if the weather is decent.

Last time I was there I went for the Triple; two pieces of large bun unable to adequately hold three-quarters of a pound of pit-roasted meat. You can choose from beef, pork, turkey and polish sausage. This is mouth-watering slow-roasting at its best. Not too sweet like some BBQ joints, and not spicy hot (although there is some zing to the polish sausage). All sandwiches at Fast Eddie's are served naked. If you want condiments, there is a whole bar of them to the side. The usual soft drinks are available.

All over America I've been to locally famous Bar-B-Que (or Barbecue or BBQ or the zillion other ways to spell it) restaurants. From the Longhorn in Spokane to the Dew Drop Inn in Waco, I've tasted a lot of pit-roasted, highly-bragged-about barbecue. Fast Eddie's is definitely in the top 10 percent.

Oh, yeah, one more thing. Be sure to save a bite for the cat that owns the parking lot. But don't try to pet her.
