Change your Name to Net40

Written: Feb 05 '01
Pros:Free for 40 hours.
Cons:Not free after 40 hours.
The Bottom Line: If you hate AOL enough and are willing to put up with a service that calls itself free and yet pay $9.95 after 40 hours, then go for it.

Well NetZero, you WERE "The Defenders of the Free World."
I receive an email in the middle of January explaining that NetZero will now be monitoring their account members' usage and anyone who uses more than 40 hours in a month will be charged $9.95 to continue using the service for the rest of their month. My "billing" cycle is 20th to 19th. If I run out of free hours on the 18th, I must purchase two days of usage at $9.95.
When I first signed up for the service, I was obviously attracted by the fact that it was free. I was willing to put up with the annoyingly large banner across the top of my very small laptop screen. I put up with the service asking me if I wanted to continue usage every 20 minutes despite the fact that I was not idle at the time. I even put up with the ad banners that did not connect to anything. Why, in God's name, do you take up 1/6 of my screen with ads that don't work?
So now NetZero expects people to put up with all this and then pay $9.95 after 40 hours? And somehow they still have the gall to advertise themselves as "Defenders of the Free World." You'd be better off with AOL and you don't know how much it pains me to say that.
