This isn't the first CD organizer that I've purchased and I doubt it will be the last. In addition to a large 100 pocket binder organizer I also have a 10 count CD sleeve that rests on my visor and several other CD protectors in the SUV. I wanted something small that I could use for just my CDs the burned compilations that I took so much care in arranging as well as some of the adult comedy of George Carlin, Henry Rollins and Martin Lawrence that Id rather not have the brood get a hold of. I saw this little puppy at Frys Electronics in the sale bin and after giving it the once over decided that for $4.99 it would be a great impulse purchase.
Case Logic Compact Disc Carrying Case
This small yet highly functional CD carrying case is great if you have a small selection of CDs that you want to keep safe but want them portable as well. While most of the CD carrying cases are basically the same, this one offers you some very nice perks while remaining completely affordable. The first thing you will notice when you unzip the case is that the zipper is quiet and flows you dont have to break a sweat trying to open the case or work it around the corners. The zipper track is external rather than internal so while it is a little louder than the ones that are recessed it makes it a lot easier to use.
The twelve compact disc pockets are exceptionally nice. Instead of the usual plastic on plastic design, this one has a black lint free cloth backing. This will keep the face of the CD from getting scratched or marred as well as help to keep dust and fuzzies to an absolute minimum. The twelve pockets are double sided which is a nice feature is you want to keep the liner notes together with the CD. The generous interior of the pocket allows you to insert and remove the notes and this does include the larger ones from double CDs. The entire grouping of CD jackets are attached to a thick plastic spine that can be removed from the CD organizer. This is nice if you want to wash the case without taking the risk of damaging the CDs. The spine runs through both sides of the CD case and helps to keep the pockets in place. Removing it and replacing it isnt the easiest task but it isnt exactly brain surgery either. With a little bit of effort you can remove the jacket section but be careful not to grab a hold of it and start pulling on it since this might start a small rip in the plastic and its all down hill from there.
Inside the CD case there is a nice webbed pocket on the left hand side. This is nice for holding an ATM or credit card, a few dollars, a gym membership card or any type of personal identification. The top portion of it isnt elastic so you might find yourself fumbling around to get at the contents. Change, metal objects, car keys and jewelry shouldnt be stored in this area since they could easily work their way out of the pocket and destroy your CDs. The webbed pocket measures six inches wide and four and a half inches high.
The plastic CD pockets feature a V frame which allows you easy access to your discs as well as prevents the pockets from ripping. The slice of the V is approximately two and a half inches deep and runs to the center cut out of the disc. This way you can stick your finger in the hole and use it as leverage to remove the disc rather than having to finger the face of it and risk damaging the surface. To me this is a great advantage in storing my discs and well worth the investment.
On the outside of the case there is a small zipper pocket that can be used for the same items as the internal webbed pocket. I dont suggest stuffing this thing to the brim since it will eventually start to warp the frame of the case and result in one ugly looking organizer. The zipper pocket measures six inches wide and four inches high. My only real complaint about this sipper pocket is that the seams of it werent made properly nor was the assembly attached to the case in good fashion. The ends of the zipper pocket track are already starting to pull away from the case and that just makes it look down right tacky. I took a metal letter opener and pushed the seams back under the flap but every so often they come undone.
The outer portion of the compact disc case is blue with black accents. The case itself measures seven inches wide, six and a half inches in length and one and a quarter inches high. The height measurement is with twelve compact discs inserted into the sleeves but even empty the measurements are almost identical since the case is rigid. The zipper track runs over three of the four corners of the case and comes with a blue zipper pull that can be replaced if you so desire.
The Bottom Line
Since this is a small CD wallet this is great for backpacks, knapsacks and gym bags. For me this was almost a necessity since there are just some CDs that kids shouldnt have access to I can toss it under the seat or in my bag and avoid any potential mishaps with my CDs. This is also great for those people that store files on CDRWs and need a safe way of transporting them back and forth to work or to a client location. If need be you can attach a small lock to the zipper pull area to make it secure.
If you do a lot of traveling with your kids you might want to invest in one of these just for their music. Theres nothing worse than reaching for a CD thinking its one of your favorites only to have it turn out being Elmo Sings The Blues or The Animaniacs. This will also give them a little bit of responsibility if they want to listen to their music then they have to make sure that the CDs are cared for properly and returned to the CD wallet when not in use.
The suggest retail price of the CD organizer is between $6.99 and $8.99 and I was pretty lucky to catch it on sale at Frys. So far its been a great asset to my CD collection and the few small inconveniencies are overshadowed by the great V cut sleeves, webbed interior pocket and general ease of use. If you are looking for a case to store your CDs while you are on the road or need to replace one that has seen better days I highly suggest that you check out the Case Logic CD Carrying Case.
As always, thanks for the visit!
