This Laptop Computer is a Lean, Mean, Fighting Machine!
by Jim Zaworski
Technology, and changes in technology, are both constants in our fast-paced society and culture. It seems that the only thing that is constant in our lives, is change. We all can agree on one thing, it seems: that tomorrow will definitely be different than today! And so it goes, with computers, getting faster and faster, smaller and smaller, and less and less expensive (depending on where you buy them). It also seems that if you buy a new computer today, it will be outdated and nearly obsolete in 6 months time. There is bound to come along a slimmer computer that holds more data, is faster, uses less energy, and is far less expensive than the computer you just shelled out two grand for! However, there comes a time when one has to bite the bullet and just splurge on a new computer. I had been in the market for a new PC, particularly one for gaming, since last year. I wanted to replace my aging, 450 MHz/128 MB RAM/12 Gig hard drive Compaq with a new desktop. However, it became clear to me very soon that there are some laptop/notebook computers out there that give just as much bang for the buck, and come in a much less cumbersome package. I shopped around, and came up with this one, the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100/2000 MHz/Windows XP Pro laptop, and put it on my birthday list at Amazon.com, and got it as a gift from my mother! What follows is a table of information on this wonderful laptop computer, followed by a review of the things I like and dont like about it.

Things I like about the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100/2000MHz Windows XP Pro.
Speed!
The 2.0 GHz Pentium 4 mobile processor is lightning fast! Everything you do on this computer is fast, fast, fast! Pages and programs open like lightning! Photos, multimedia files, word programs, all open extremely quickly, and smoothly. One thing speed is good for is computer gaming, which is why I got this laptop to begin with. All of your Direct X based games are handled easily by this computers processor.
Memory, sweet memory!
The base model of this has 256 MB of random access memory (RAM). Of course, you can upgrade your model later, or have it souped up to your specifications. I had 512 MB installed on this baby, and boy, is it ever worth it! I have never run out of memory, real, or virtual, with this much RAM! I have had tons of things open, applications going, online downloading stuff, and playing a game, all at once, and never had a problem in performance, no matter what I was doing! The 256 MB of RAM that comes with it is adequate for most people, but for gamers, get 512 MB RAM or more (Im talking hardcore gamers).
DVD heaven and CD/R, CD/RW delights.
The DVD player on this is great. Watch a DVD movie, or play a DVD-ROM, and it works extremely well. The same unit is also a CD/RW unit, and it is the best one I have tried yet. I can copy a music CD with ease, or make my own music CD with no problem. Data CDs, using drag and drop, are also done with ease on this model. I only wish it copied DVDs (well, we always want what we cant have!).
The LCD 15 screen.
With a laptop, most people think you have to peer into that tiny screen. Well, not with this one! A full 15 screen rivals most desktop computers monitors. Rich graphics and rich color are not compromised with the LCD monitor.
The Hard Drive/Storage Space.
This baby has a 60 GIGABYTE hard drive!!!!! I cant believe they can pack that much into any laptop computer. Prior to this, the biggest hard drive I have seen a laptop is a 30 Gb hard drive. It staggers the imagination, and the mind, to think that a laptop can hold 3 times as much as my biggest desktop tower! So, there is no need for extra storage, zip drives, etc. Of course, I have them, and use them for backup for work and school work purposes, just in case there is a crash. I cant think that I even have enough software and data programs to fill 60 Gb. Its incredible!
The BUS ports.
I love the versatility of having 4, not 2, serial BUS ports on this laptop. It is great, since you dont have to keep unplugging and plugging in, the various devices (printers, zip drives, mice, etc.) that use the BUS port interface hookups. I have three of them in use with a spare (if I want to hook up a scanner or something else), BUS port free.
Portability.
Bella bella, portabella! Despite all of the extras, this laptop isnt that heavy, and at 6.4 lbs., it is pretty portable. It packs easily into any briefcase and/or specialized laptop carrying case, and is indispensable to bring for business purposes, or for schoolwork, if you are a student.
The Look.
I also love the look of this laptop. It has a nice black and smooth, and sporty finish and a fine sheer look to it. Its just so cool!
The pre-packaged software.
The Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 comes with a nice software package, and this includes first and foremost Windows XP Pro. How it differs from Windows XP Home, I havent really explored yet, since I have only just gotten it last week. Ive so far only loaded some of my gaming software and marveled at how easily this computer can deal with all of that. Other goodies on here are other Microsoft programs, such as Internet Explorer, MSN software, Works, Money, and Word. There are the usual games and goodies that come with Windows XP as well.
Things I dont like about this laptop.
This section of my review will be extremely short, since there is virtually nothing I can complain about here! If I had purchased this laptop myself, the only thing I could complain about is price, price, and price! There are better deals out there for similar computers. In fact, if I hadnt gotten this laptop as a birthday gift, there is a sale at Aldi grocery stores for a 2.2 GHz Pentium 4 Medion Technologies laptop that fits all of the specifications for this computer, and is only $1499.00. If I were spending my own money, Id buy that one, or the upcoming sale at the same store for a Medion 2.6 GHz desktop computer for $1199.00. But, since it was my birthday, and I was talking about getting a new laptop, and received it as a gift, I cant complain too much!
All in all, the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100/2000MHz Windows XP Pro is an awesome laptop computer. It rivals and exceeds almost every desktop PC you have ever had or tried. It is portable, powerful, and endowed with everything a computer nut could want, or dream of. The only problem with it, is that it is very, very expensive. However, if you have lots of money, and want one of the top of the line laptop computer models available today, you have to give the Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100/2000MHz Windows XP Pro a try, you wont regret it!
