| tommy_lop's Full Review: Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console |
When it comes to the current generation of consoles there are 3 choices. There was the Xbox which I have absolutely no interest in, no games that appeal to me, nor any special features that really interested me. Sure there is the internet play but with the internet connection I have in my area the Xbox 3 would be out before I could actually use this feature.
The Nintendo Gamecube interested me, it was cheaper, it works with the GBA, and it is made by one of the longest running game company's. However it was the drawbacks that made me decide to get a PS2 first. (yes this means I will get one sometime in the future)
No cd player, no dvd player, no backward compatibly with older system. It was the fact that game cube didnt have these but the PS2 did that made me get the PS2.
System
The PS2 is probably the 2nd largest system to date (the 1st is the xbox). It is rectangular and the length is has long has a lot of dvd players. The system is about has tall has a VCR. Needless to say the system is bulky and definitely not portable. However it doubles has a dvd and cd player so it's a does safe space (provided that your not one of the millions of people who doesnt have any of these.)
Graphics.
The graphics aren't has great has the gamecube in a lot of the games, but then the system is one year older. However compared to a lot of N64 games the graphics are pretty great. The graphics in the games I have played where brightly colored, and had incredibly smooth animation, and absolutely no polygon edges.
Controller.
The controller for the PS2 is almost exactly the same has the PS1 duelshock controller, in fact it's name is duelshock 2. There is a bit more different then the darker color however. The buttons on this are analog, this is supposedly for sports and racing games. The harder you press the action buttons the more the people react. This does give the PS2 controller a bit of a different feel then that of the PS1, but once you get over that it's pretty much the same light weight and conformable to hold controller of the psone.
Games.
What's a console without games, since the ps2 has a one-year lead over the other it's got a slight lead over the other consoles. To bad a lot of the earlier ones aren't that great. However, there are a lot of gems out there that are worth trying.
Gundam Journey To Jaburo.
The first game I picked up for the PS2 may not appeal to everybody, but it will to Gundam fans. Bandai understands a few things about license games, and that is it's almost impossible to make a great one. So if you can't make a great one, you might has well stick a good game and put a lot of features that people who are attracted to the license will like. In this case Gundam, the actual real game is fairly short, however with unlockable side missions and additional mobile suits. Along with several animated clips from the original series this one is worth a look for the gundam fans.
Jak and Daxter.
I can't believe I heard the word originality when it comes to this game, if this game was any closer to Spyro the dragon Jax would be using Daxter has a flame-thrower. Still it has a lot of fun gameplay elements and puzzles to overcome. And with the smart aleck Daxter giving plenty of laughs to the death scenes makes it worth a pickup.
FFX
The 10th Final Fantasy game comes out for the PS2 with life like graphics, a good story line, and an improve engine over the other FF games 10 is a must get if your getting a PS2. If only to hold yourself over for FFXI and FFX-2.

Marvel vs Capcom.
While it's not the most innovated game ever, in fact it's a port of a dreamcast game from 2 years ago. Still with Spiderman, Megaman, Ryu, The incredible Hulk, Wolverine and Tron Bonne trying to beat the heck out of each other is something defintley worth seeing.

Spiderman the movie.
When it comes to comic license games most of them fall under the Superman 64 toxic waste category, Spiderman has a few games under these to. Luckily the 2 3d Spiderman games Ive play don't fit under this category. Spiderman the movie has updated controls over the original, and Spidey gets to use all of his super powers. Web slinging, wall crawling, agility, and of course the wise crack.
Kingdom Hearts
Disney and Final Fantasy Charecters in a Zelda64 like game in which you journey through classic worlds. This is one that you don't want to miss.
Games I haven't played but liked to check out.
Dark cloud.
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3.
The best thing about the PS2 is the backward compatibility with the old Playsation. If you don't own a PS1 then getting a PS2 also lets you play a bunch of great PS1 game. Final Fantasy 7 & 9. Mega Man Legends, Mega Man X4-6, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Chronicles. There is only one thing that is necessary for you to play PS1 game, and that's a PS1 memory card, but then there's a reason for that.
memory card.
The PS2 memory card is different then the Ps1 memory card, and to save PS2 games you'll need the 8MB card made by Sony. While the card is 25 dollars and a bit pricey but it gets rid of the 15 block card system. And the 8MB can give you anywhere between 80 to 100 saves, sure beats 15.
DVD.
PS2 has a DVD player in it. The DVD player isnt the best, but then I wasnt looking for a great one. Just one that plays movies, and the PS2 does that adequately. Still the PS2 DVD lacks any real special features. Also the pictures are a bit darker then they should be, still if your looking for a gaming system and a dvd player it's still a 2 for one deal.
final recommendation.
The PS2 has a bit bigger selection of games then it's competitor and it's backward compatible. Plus DVD and CD players inside it.
