| rally-x's Full Review: Clarion SRM203 Car |
Clarion has made an affordable dynamic alternative to piezo tweeters.
I feel I need to explain my application so you have the context of how I utilize these tweeters. My speaker setup is as follows in my hatchback type car (Mazda RX-7):
2 Clarion SRM203 0.75" PEI tweeters (Front)
2 JBL GTC4304 4" Component Midwoofers (Front)
2 JBL GTO502 5.25" Coaxial Speakers (Back)
1 Jensen JTS80 8" Tube Subwoofer (Back)
In my car the front speakers face downward and into the passenger's (or driver's) legs. There is not a line-of-sight path to the speaker, so the highs are muffled. I mounted the Clarion tweeters to panels inside of the exterior side mirrors. In this location both the passenger and the driver have a line of sight path to both of the tweeters (no obstructions), and each tweeter is not far from its associated 4" midwoofer (this helps keep the sound source more unified).
These tweeters are not harsh and their presence fills the hole that was inherent in my car's speaker layout. They use a dynamic coil/magnet drive, so they do not suffer from the distortion inherent in piezo type tweeters. They can handle more power than I will ever throw at them (130W peak). Keep in mind that sound quality is subjective, and what sounds excellent to me may not for you.
The actual case on the tweeters is approximately 1.5" in diameter. The tweeters can be surface mounted (the method I used due to space limitations) or flush mounted. The flush mounting option looks very clean, but it requires surgery to be performed on the desired mounting surface. When flush mounted, the tweeters can pivot for precised aiming. There also has to be about 0.75" clearance behind the surface for the tweeter. When the tweeters are surface mounted, they twist and lock onto a small metal bracket (supplied). A crossover is wired in-line on the included tweeter cables. Package includes all necessary hardware for mounting. There is no logo on the tweeter and they blend in well on a black surface.
Remember, these tweeters are intended for use in a car - an environment with a lot of background noise (usually). In this circumstance, minute differences in tweeter design don't carry a lot of weight with me.
Price includes shipping (bought new, damaged box off of ebay).
