| rzajac11's Full Review: PrimeCo Mobile Phone Service in Chicago |
They were first in Chicago with CDMA technology, fully digital, most advanced, with best power management and lowest EMI (no cancer :-).
I started with a Qualcomm phone in 1997 and wasn't too happy. The problem was poor receptions, mainly inside buildings (stores, malls). In 1999 the phone broke and I replaced it with a Motorola StarTAC ST7868W. WHAT A CHANGE! Now I enjoy almost 100% coverage even after I broke the external antenna!
I hear others complaining about poor reception (mostly AT&T and Sprint) and I can say that no other network/phone combination comes even close (the next best thing is probably Nextel). I think that's because PrimeCo is not as popular as AT&T or Verizon and their network is not overloaded. Plus I know that a good phone makes a deference. I know few other people with PrimeCo phones and most of them confirm my experience.
Be aware of leaving digital network and going into analog. The phone drains battery in less than 24 hours of standby mode. Otherwise it last about 4-6 days if rarely used.
Roaming shouldn't be a problem. Their CDMA network covers most of IL, WI and parts of IN and MI, also few other states. other networks serve the remaining areas.
I was in NC and had great service most everywhere. They probably have a roaming agreement with Verizon (also CDMA network).
They used to have some good plans (like $50 unlimited local) but not anymore. I have an old plan with no minutes for only $8/month. With 1st incoming minute free and my light usage I usually pay $12-$15/month. that's yet another reason I stick with them.
Unless you need fast data services or downloadable games, if you want the best voice service and coverage in Chicagoland, get a Motorola phone from PrimeCo (now US Cellular) and enjoy.
