| binz's Full Review: Toshiba Portege 7140CT (PP714U-T2W8P1) PC Notebook |
At first glance.. the 7140 is thin, light, and "cool" looking. inside this gadget resides a pentium III 500, 13.3 inch monitor and a full size keyboard. I wont lie and say that the 7140 is the ultimate portable for everyone. Its not. If if u travel often and can't stand the small 10 to 12" screens.. this is it! The 7140 is the only portable out there that's 1" thin and 4.4lb while equip with a HUGE 13.3 in screen.
however, unlike other notebooks of this price, it doesn't come with cdrom, which makes installing win2000 fairly painful.
after performing the initial installation and appoximately 5 minutes of use, i was quite disappointed when my laptop crashed.. however i assume that this was a windows 98 bug.. because ever since i installed windows 2000. i've not experience another crash.
I. things that i don't really care, but might bug other people:
1. it doesn't come with a cd-rom. i don't really care about this except when installing a new os. otherwise, just connect to another computer when installing software off a cd. Think about it.. why lug a 2 lb cd-rom everywhere when u only install software once in while.
2. floppy drive is external.. again.. why lug a floppy drive around when you hardly use the floppy drive?
3. serial port, parallel port and ps/2 is on a 1lb port expander.. i've had my old laptop for the last 4 years and I've never had to use the serial, or parallel port. so why bother. I bought a usb mouse so i dont need the ps/2 port anymore either.
II things i love about 7140:
1. enhanced view pleasures brought by the 13.3in screen
2. full size keyboard unlike other 1" portables
3. light, small, powerful
4. everything else!
before purchasing, just remember to consider your needs properly. what kind of sacrafices are you willing to make for what in return. in this particular case, i gave up cd-rom, ports, and money for size, large screen and speed. the 3 year warranty helped my decision making too!
