UG isn't ugh at all

Written: Dec 04 '02
The Bottom Line: A great "graphic" book that will create giggles and comments.

UG
Boy Genius of the Stone Age
Author: Raymond Briggs
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 0-375-81611-9
Price: 15.95
HC
Age Group: 8 and up (adults will enjoy this "graphic novel" also)

UG is created in a "graphic" novel sense, or if you want to call it a "comic-like" book you could. It is a fun book for children of all ages. The story line is simple for children to understand, and will have adults giggling in their hands.

Basic Summary:
UG wants one thing most in the world; soft pants. He is tired of having to wear stone pants, having a stone blanket, a stone cave...or just about anything that is stone.
His parents keep explaining to him the reason everything is stone is because they live in the stone age.

Simple story line, right?
Yes.
But there is fun dialogue throughout, and it makes the story much more interesting. When UG remarks he would like warm food, his mother goes on a rampage that would make any mother laugh with the memory of the times they gone through this "stage-age".

Included with the story are brief "narrative" additives pertaining to some of the words or phrases used.
Example: Week
Narrative note: There were no "weeks" in the stone age, nor was there month or years. In the stone age, time stood still.

I appreciated though that the author used "modern" words throughout to complete the story-line. It made it more fun for the reader.

In regards to the illustrations.
I liked the fun drawings. They were quite comical, and kept with the pattern of the story. The illustrations are broken with lines on some of the pages to make this book a "graphic or comic-like" read.
The only "negative" comment I would have is in regards to the mother's drawing. She wore a stone skirt, but her bossoms were bare and were drawn as such. For some of the younger readers that may cause questions and problems.

But overall: this is a great book that I highly recommend.
