Sandwich Planet: The Safest Sandwich Shop in Manhattan
by Epicure | Feb 06 '01
First-rate sandwich shop, featuring an endless number of selections. Definitely try the churascos. But don't expect much in terms of atmosphere.

alright just had sandwich planet today and it's everything you said it was. I opted for the "pacino" which is proscuitto, hot salame and fontina on focaccia. Excellent stuff!

Thanks for the tip.

I have two words for you, my friend - Cupcake Cafe (39th and 9th).

If you have never been to the Cupcake Cafe, you should definitely check it out. They offer the most gorgeous cakes in the city at the most reasonable prices.

Sandwich Planet is also conveniently located near the huge AMC theater (42nd and 8th) that I mentioned to you. Sometimes if we are running late for a movie, we just grab a couple of sandwiches to go. Certainly beats the stuff at the food court.

I would feel terrible for not having shared this with you while you were still here, but for the fact that Sandwich Planet didn't exist 3 years ago. After 5 years in NYC, it still amazes me how many new restaurants and eateries pop up every week. Next time you're planning a trip to NYC, feel free to email me, and I'd be happy to share my latest finds with you.

Let me know what you think. I've never been to New Orleans (or should I say nawlins) so I don't know what an authentic Muffaletta should taste like. I've been meaning to visit since I hear it's home to some of the best restaurants in the country. I'll have to ask for your Muffaletta recommendations before I go.

Thanks for your comment.

...and all those 10 years prior when I came into and went out of the Port Authority between Montclair, NJ and Manhattan EVERY workday I had no idea this place existed.

Where were you when I needed you? When I think of the number of times I opted to grab something to eat inside the PA because the tunnel was blocked or some such. Aaargh!

Muffaletta - I've been searching far and wide for a quality version of this nawlin's treat here in the city.

You're right, that location is in the armpit of lower manhattan but I'll brave it now! (Besides NYC blood bank is nearby so maybe I can do a good deed to justify a treat).

Considering all the unusual combinations that are being served in top restaurants today, I think maybe your mom was on to something. I was a terrible kid when it came to lunch - I traded my PB & J for any junk food I could get my hands on. My mom never packed any sweets in my lunches. That's probably why I'm so obsessed with dessert now. :)

Thanks for your comment.

Sandwiches used to remind me of those sad peanut butter and jelly things my mom (who always worked full-time) packed for me for lunch in elementary school. Or, sometimes I even think of the "weird" peanut butter, scrambled egg, and American cheese sandwich my mom first made me in kindergarten (before she knew Americans only put certain combinations of food together, and never peanut butter, cheese, and egg!).

Nowadays, I think of this fabulous little Italian deli over in Oakland that has the most amazing Italian meat sandwiches, complemented by these breaded/stuffed artichoke hearts, pasta salads, and old-fashioned cream sodas!

Great review! I would love to try a churrasco!

Sincerely,
Anna
