Motel 6 - NEVER AGAIN!

Written: Dec 08 '02
Pros:Least expensive price in area, clean
Cons:Horrible/rude staff, no parking, our door was broken, etc.
The Bottom Line: I don't know if all Motel 6's are like this, but I definitely will never return to another one to find out!

Last night my friend and I stayed at a Motel 6 in Arcadia, CA. We hope to never have to do this again.

Upon arrival we were unable to find a parking space, despite the fact that there were vacant rooms. Why? The parking lot had been taken over by drunken teenagers - a single room was housing approximately 50 of them. The manager was outside screaming obscenities at them, and one tripped over my friend's car.

When we got to our room, we put our luggage inside and decided to go get take-out from a nearby restaurant. When we came back to our room, we couldn't get in - the key card made the light turn green (which usually indicates that it works), but the door wouldn't open. We called the front office, and the clerk asked what all the noise in the background was (downstairs the teenagers and manager were still screaming), as if WE had something to do with it. We explained our situation, and asked if he could come help us. He said no, we would have to come down there. So we carried our food to the front office and were issued two new keys - again, neither worked. We went down again, and again we were issued 2 more keys which would not work. Still, no one would come help us. By this time, an hour had passed and our food was cold.

I asked to speak to the manager. She was extremely rude and spoke to us in a condescending tone. I asked if we could at least be reimbursed for our food that, at this point, was inedible seeing as it had been sitting out for an hour and was cold. She laughed and told us no - she did not pay for the food, and she would therefore not give us our money back. She offered no apologies for what we had gone through, and honestly, she was quite frightening to be around. She told us to call corporate if we wanted to complain, because she was unwilling to help us. I told her I needed to get my things out of the room, so she walked us to our room, got the door open after about 5 minutes, and told us to get everything out. She then flung a new key on the nightstand and told us to go to another room when we were done. She kept talking to us like we were nothing, saying things like "Shut the door when you are done, ok? OK? OK? OK?" in an extremely insulting manner.

By the time we finally settled into our room, it was about 11:30PM. I felt that the whole night was wasted. I have never been treated so poorly or felt my security jeoparized so greatly while staying at a hotel in my life (and I've stayed at a few hotels that were much cheaper than Motel 6). The hotel is actually in a very nice city, in a not-so-bad part of town, so I was shocked at some of the stuff that was going on there (the drunk teenager falling on our car, for instance).

The room itself was $60 for 2 people, and that beats all other hotels in the area by about $40. We requested one bed, but we got 2 beds, which was another issue. The sheets were clean, as was the rest of the room, with some exceptions in the bathroom - the floor had some hair on it, and the toilet wasn't very clean either.

The plus side to Motel 6? You get free HBO (on a very poor quality TV - I'm not expecting a big screen Sony or anything, but all of the channels had a green tint to them), the room is clean for the most part, and they claim to be striving towards environmental friendliness (they wash the sheets every other day, unless you request otherwise).

I have tried to contact corporate, however the number I was given does not work, nor do numbers I have found on various websites. There is a feedback form on Motel 6's website, but it doesn't allow me to type everything I would like to (it cuts me off after a paragraph), and I would prefer to explain this to someone over the phone.
