The Bottom Line Finding work is hard, but if you go through an agency, they find the work for you.

I was fired.
I was fired from my last job for a reason still unknown. I don't know what I did, who I did it to, but I walked into work one Friday morning almost a year ago, and got 2 weeks of pay and was sent home. I was upset. It was my first real office job, doing data entry for a small telephone company. $10 an hour. More than I was making waitressing. I didn't want to go back to working at Denny's.

I hit the classifieds...
And so, I hit the classifieds, like all of the other people my age, out of University, and needing a job. I got so desperate, I actually pulled every fax number out of certain sections, without reading the ad, and faxed my resume in. I had several interviews, which usually ended with someone like selling cheap calculators door-to-door. (that's what you get for mass faxing your resume.) I got a call from a nice-sounding lady to go in for an interview.

The Temp Agency???
The interview went great. It sounded as though I would be a perfect receptionist 'for them'... I even gave them a voided cheque for my direct deposit. That's when I found out it was a Temp Service. They find temporary jobs (anywhere from a day, to months on end) for their employees. I left with the thought that they are never going to call me, since I didn't realize how many jobs there were out there. Every receptionist that is sick, on maternity leave, or needs extra help, usually uses a temp service.

the PROS!
There are many pros of using a service such as this. As soon as I got home, they had a job for me the next day, waiting for me on their voice mail. I haven't been without a job in 8 months, with the exception of taking days off whenever I feel like it. That's bonus #2. If you don't want to work, either don't call them back, or just say NO! They have dozens of employees (usually younger women) that they can call up. The temp company I work for has anywhere from 200-300 temp employees working for them on any given day. And bonus #3. The pay is pretty good... I'm making $13, just answering phones. (which is a lot more than I was getting for typing my fingers off.) There is a lot of free time, such as now, when I'm "hard at work." Also, there is no boss to report to. I am never worried about being fired. And if one of the places I go to doesn't like me, so what!!! There are dozens of other jobs the agency could find me. And they will find me a job. They make money off it. They don't take the money from my cheques either, they take it from the company I'm working for.

The CONS.
Of course, with every good thing, there are cons. Right now, there is only one stuck in my mind: When I was working as a temp receptionist for a government agency, making $14 an hour, the other receptionist said they are paying up around $24.50 an hour for me. That's $10.50 that the agency makes because of MY WORK an hour!!! I try to keep it in perspective by saying that I wouldn't have this work if it weren't for them. Another con that just came to mind is, it's hard to find a full time job on your own. Working day-to-day, you never really have time to schedule interviews. You don't get paid for your sick days, or time off. It gets easy to let the weeks, months, years float by.

Okay, well, if you're looking for a job, and like the diversity of different places, do call up your local temp service! You can usually find them in the Yellow pages. If you are in Canada, try Temporarily Yours (that's the one I use) and their web address is www.hunt.ca (hunt for a job.) or you could try Office Team (nationwide.) at www.officeteam.com (original. ;)
