I recently re-enlisted in the Army (I have no idea why still, but that is a WHOLE different story..), and since I am changing my MOS (job) from what I did before, I had to go back to school.
This is not entirely a bad thing, as I do not have to deal with Drill Sergeants or any of that mess, I have my car and computer in my own room and it is pretty nice in general.
But to get to the point, they close the training Brigade for 2 weeks for Christmas, so I get to go home to the Family. I went to Travelocity.com to purchase the ticket, and was amazed that it was only $206 round trip (including tax) to fly from Atlanta, GA (2 hour drive from here, but much cheaper than flying out of Augusta) to Fort Myers, FL (home sweet home...Fort Misery). So I was really pumped and bought the ticket immediately.
I printed the receipt to turn in with my Leave Request, and then read it...the flight was for 17 December instead of 18 December, when I know for a fact I put in the 18th for the date to leave. Oh, well, I caught it the next day after I booked the flight, so figured there would be like a $30 charge or so to change the ticket, especially since it was an electronic ticket, not paper.
So I called, the Customer Service people were very polite, and it was a good experience in general, right up until I was told the price for changing a ticket...$130. So now my $206 ticket became $336 - it would have been cheaper and easier to drive home, but I originally thought that for $206 I may as well do it.
It may have been my fault the flight was on the wrong day, it was definitely my fault that I didn't look closely enough at the date when I purchased the ticket to see the mistake, but $130 is ridiculous to charge for changing a ticket - that is more than half the price of the ticket.
I guess that is how they can sell everyone else tickets so cheap - by charging morons like myself that book it for the wrong day. But what if plans change that aren't your fault? I am eating the $130 sheepishly because it was my mistake, but if the Army had told me that I couldn't leave until the 19th and I had to change my ticket I would be IRATE that it costs so much to change.
So in short, make sure that you are definitely going to need the ticket on the date and time and everything before you pay for the ticket, or else you will have problems.
