The new Ford Five Hundred is in fact a Volvo under the skin and the Mazda 3 is mechanically similar to the upcomeing Ford Focus and is very similar to the Volvo S40 - so i guess my answer is yes.

MINI is not BMW. It does not even have a BMW engine in it.

Saying a MINI is a BMW is lying. Just because BMW owns the company MINI, doesn't make it the same. Different engineers and designers work on the car. Ford owns Volvo and Land Rover, are they Ford vehicles?

I agree! When I hear that someone has a Beamer, I think of dollar signs right off the bat.

No way is the MINI overpriced. I would say that something like the Viper is overpriced... But I'd still pay that much for it if I had the money... It's just the principal of it all.

"The MINI (by the way all the letters in MINI are caps not lower case) is a premium little car. It is not suppose to be cheap."

Is this true? You can get a loaded cooper for under $25,000. Last time I checked, this is pretty cheap for a fully-loaded car.

Even if value wasn't in mind for MINI, it is still pretty cheap.

"BMW does not make cheap cars. I paid 20,000.00 for my MINI and it's worth every penny"

BMW 325i is a pretty cheap car, for a luxury European car. So, they do for their category. It is difficult to find a Volvo or Benz (excluding the cheap C-class) for under $30,000.

A MINI isn't exactly BMW. MINI is a BMW owned company, but it doesn't have a BMW engine inside and it doesn't have the BMW logo pasted on the hood.

Excellent review and lots of good info here - but if you think the ride is choppy - you oughta try an original Mini for size!!

Great review of a wonderful car. I owned an original mini for many years and after test driving one of the new ones can't wait to get my hands on one. Roll on August and delivery!

Actually, it is pretty good value for an European car being brought out by a company like BMW.

Besides, since when are great looks and performance cheap?

The MINI Cooper S has pretty good performance, you have to admit that. I mean, for it's size.

I however, would not feel safe in it on the highway, afraid that some American SUV might come hurling into me.

In order to make a fair comparison you'd have to compare the Cooper S to the WRX, SE-R and GTI while the normally aspirated Cooper would compare to the Impreza, Golf and Sentra. None of the latter cars offer even a fraction of the fun, uniqueness and safety technology as the MINI Cooper.

The Sentra SpecV is rough and unrefined. It may have tons of power, but it is nowhere near as much fun as the MINI - WRX, ok that is probably a better car, but it is $24,000 plus. For that price the Cooper would have such features as a nav system and a huge sunroof. The MINI is still the best thing going in small, fast, affordable cars.

A Nissan Sentra compared to a MINI?? C'mon that's not even close to being reasonable - a super-cool, performance packed sports car with side and head curtain airbags, available CVT, and an impressive heritage plus it's built by BMW; or a small stink-box economy car built by Nissan with a maxed-out engine added Hmmm I wonder which will be better?

I paid 20,000.00 for my MINI and it's worth every penny. By the way it won the 2003 North American Car of the Year Award. And it won the J.D. Power and Assoc. Award in 2002.

Price on the Mini is not that great... (Reply to this comment)

It's interesting to note that you mention that the Mini is low-priced, yet the price of a Cooper S puts it right in line with a Subaru Impreza WRX or a Golf GTI, even a Mustang GT. Although lacking in personality, the Nissan Sentra SE-R offers more power, more torque and more practicality for thousands less. The base model Cooper is substantially cheaper, but it's too underpowered to be sporty at all.

I'm not saying that buying a Mini is a terrible purchase, it's just the buyers of Minis are most likely not in search of value. People buying this are going for the look and style, and bang for the buck is secondary. Unfortunatly, the success of such cars is often short-lived...

Just my 2 cents.
