Expedia: Not What It Used To Be by BeastieGirl | Dec 14 '02 There are now so many ways to book a flight, who would have thought? Five years ago, the only way to book a flight was through a travel agent or phoning the airline direct. Now with Priceline.com, hotwire.com and all of the other direct airline web...Return to opinion

Great review! I used to love Expedia but lately it's been Yahoo Travel for me. I compared then again just last night (planning a romantic trip for 2 to Vegas) and Yahoo had the best room rates by far. Sad, as Expedia was my first online travel experience.
Thanks again!

Thanks for the comments! I think it's so sad to see all these airlines in financial trouble, especially because it DOES affect real people. Something to think about for sure.

Excellent job on this review -- Alot of true content and very accurate. Being an economist and working on wall street, plus having alot of friends on the operational side of the airlines business gives me an interesting view of the industry -- You get to see both the money side of it and the internal "people" side. The airline industry is changing at mach speed, particularly on an operation level... Not too long ago we had businessmen (like myself) paying over a thousand dollars for a last minute flight to wherever on business, you simply called you company's travel dept. on said get me there, no matter what price. Nowadays our companies' travel departments have already been laid off, and there is no more "whatever the price" theory -- our bosses have taken us by the ears and said "CUT THE COSTS - make like everybody else, go onto expedia and buy a cheap ticket!"
The bottom line is that revenues to carriers just aren't there anymore, because there are no more last minute thousand-dollar seats, the biz people pay 149.99 like everybody else! As a result, everything surrounding the industry (from car rentals, to airports all the way to the travelocities and expedias of the world) are changing very fast - like you, I probably would have given expedia a big two thumbs up, but now I'd probably give it 3 or 3 1/2 at best!
excellent review!~

Thanks for the comment- well, I guess there are just too many competitors, some doing it better than others- I will give Expedia this, they were good when they started, just couldn't keep up, I guess!

I don't remember how many stars I gave Expedia -- probably 3 or 4, but it would be definitely lower if I re-wrote my review today. Mostly because they've cut back on how much information they provide you (they used to have a "More flights" button on the bottom of their initial search results, but that's gone bye-bye, just like my high opinions of their usability...which is now nothing great).
Nicely said!
