I know it is a bit early to think about hotdogs, peanut vendors and baseball, but if you are seeking to find a super gift for any little leaguer in your house the Laser Ball at The Sharper Image store can not be beat.
The Sharper Image is a phenomenal shop that is for high tech toys and gadgets that can appeal to almost anyone. There amongst the shelves is a baseball called The Laser Ball.
For those people that know me, they know I have a son who is now a college pitcher. Have to put a plug in for my sweetie-it is part of mothers bragging rights.
I am the typical proud mom, but I also was the support for my son and his pitching for the last 13 years. This Laser Ball is a wonderful dynamic aid to any boy or girl who wants to improve their pitching skills.
The ball is basically a radar gun built right into the inner workings of the baseball. One the outer covering is a small white background screen with a digital read out that informs the pitches just how fast his ball is going. The ball starts when you tap the ball on the side of the glove. It then registers zero speed. You pitch the ball and when it hits the catchers mitt it is activated at its final speed. To reset the ball, you need to retap the Laser Ball and your good to go.
This is not a ball for hitting with a bat. If you do you will break it. The ball is activated by a small watch type battery, which can be replaced by a typical 1.5-volt battery. The battery is easily replaced by unscrewing a small metal hatch opening on the underside of the ball.
The advantages are simple and I can assure you that this information came direct from my son. Firstly, the speed relayed on the Laser Ball is both consistent and pretty accurate. My son has been timed with professional radar devices at college and the Laser Ball is pretty close to the radar guns. Secondly, the digital readout is easy and clear to read. The final advantage is simple really. When you have a child who is fast becoming a serious athlete they need to have this type of information to see improvement and to head on the right track. Knowing your improving in speed serves to improve a sense of confidence in the athlete. This is so important in children who are going to take sports seriously.
The price is 30 dollars at the Sharper Image and the device is worth every penny. We have had the Laser Ball for about three years now and with constant usage it has not broken or faltered.
If you are thinking of buying a great gift for any athlete thinking of serious pitching in Little League or beyond then this Laser Ball is for you
