Just the Facts, Ma'am

The Bottom Line Make your decision based on the facts and what's right for you - not on the myths.

I have to tell you that I'm pretty middle of the road when it comes to the big cloth/disposable debate. Although I currently cloth diaper my children, I have also used disposables and I have empathy for both sides of this issue.

But whatever you decide to do, don't decide against cloth because it's "so hard." Or for disposables because they're so "much more convenient." I am a working mother of 7 children. Yes, I said SEVEN. I cloth diaper because it's cheaper, but also because I feel good about it. It's (in my opinion) healthier for the environment (I think the earth deals better with poo than with plastic) and I love the way the cloth diapers feel. I think my babies would choose cloth if they could make the choice for themselves. So cloth is right for us.

But I struggled with the decision because of the big myths circulating about cloth and disposables. First of all, my babies do not get more rashes with cloth. Honest. I used disposables on 3 babies and have used cloth on 4 so I feel I have a pretty good test sample. Second, I don't have to change my babies more often with cloth. (I mean, let's face it, adding more work to my life would be the kiss of death for a project - no matter how environmentally friendly it was!) But the fact of the matter is that my cloth diapers are at least as absorbent as the disposables. Third, cloth is cheaper in the long run than disposables. No matter how you add it up, the cost of washing diapers/wipees is less than the cost of paying for them (even when we bought the cheap kind from Costco). And cloth is even more economical if you plan to use them for more than one child or if you plan to resell them after you are finished using them (there is quite a market for used cloth diapers). And last, the biggest myth of all, cloth is not a lot harder than disposables. Okay - if you want to talk about going-camping-for-a-week-bottom-of-the-line-convenience, yeah, disposables are going to be more convenient. But, on average, cloth is not that much harder than disposables. (I don't soak my diapers in the toilet, I don't touch the poo, I throw them in the washer and wash them 3 times with regular detergent then throw them in the dryer.)

Right now I have 3 babies in diapers and I work full time. If I can do cloth, anyone can. So when you make the decision about whether cloth or disposables are right for your family and your baby, make the decision based on the facts and what's right for you - not on the myths.
